I've witnessed and experienced more mental health recovery than I really want to think about. I've also witnessed people I love deciding to just stay where they are unaware of how that leads to mental deterioration. This really captures the physicality of what a mental health battle looks like. The quiet moments of not wanting to think. Your body moving you forward despite the trauma wanting to stall whatever you try to do. I was worried this would be a little too much PTSD tourism, but the journey was just enough to show its reality while also showing the incremental healing that absolutely does happen. You can get better, it's just hard to tell inside your own mind. Fantastic film making that showcases a battle everyone faces in some capacity with some diagnosis or other at some point in life.
The magical realism, like all good uses of magical realism, made this feel more true than anything else I have ever seen portray motherhood. If we fight the nature of this both beautiful and barbaric state of being we end up disjointed in a way that's so specifically hard that we still don't have adequate words for it. The primal knowing that is so unfamiliar to ourselves because of the way most of society is structured. This was beautiful, hilarious, very real, and shows how deeply dirty motherhood is in a way that is affirming and substantial. This is philosophical in a way I doubt many are going to understand, but I know this film will stand the test of time. MORE OF THIS!
Wow, this was so dynamic and felt so 90's in a way that I really miss! The rambling kind of drop in reality of how emotionally confusing life is, but with a but more structure. Almost like Say Anything... but for friendship. There is lots and lots of laughter and heart.
The negative reviews seem to focus on not liking the characters, which is fair because liking things is subjective, but seriously ignore them if you life an existential journey of growth. It reminds me of something me and my best friend went through like decades ago, so it's not just about todays trends.
Also just like, if you Love Tig and Stephanie, you will love this. Go watch it!
