"Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" (translated as "Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sorrow") is a 2001 Indian family drama film directed by Karan Johar. The story revolves around the affluent Raichand family and explores themes of love, pride, and the generational divide.
Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) and his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) have two sons, Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Rohan (Hrithik Roshan). Rahul is adopted but deeply loved by his parents. As an adult, Rahul falls in love with Anjali (Kajol), a vivacious girl from a lower socioeconomic background. Despite his father's disapproval, Rahul marries Anjali and is subsequently disowned by Yash.
Rahul and Anjali move to London, where they start a new life. Years later, Rohan, now grown up, discovers the rift in his family and vows to reunite them. He travels to London, befriends Rahul and Anjali without revealing his identity, and eventually convinces them to return to India. The film culminates in an emotional reunion where Yash realizes his mistakes and welcomes Rahul, Anjali, and their young son back into the family fold.
The film highlights the importance of family, the clash between traditional values and modern beliefs, and the enduring power of love and forgiveness.
