This apparently goes over a lot of people's heads. The negative reviews are saying, its not horror, just another teen drama. But they're missing the point. It's a wonderfully told story of young terminally ill teens coping with their mortality, while also keeping elements of horror. I thought the stories told by the midnight club (in the show) was an excellent artistic expression of character building because their was always a sense of truth in every story. The story building (in the actual show) is a bit slow but still maintains enough suspense and mystery to keep you interested. A fair share of jump scares. A few things were a little predictable but the ending opens more questions suggesting a possible season 2. Worth the watch.
Don't go in expecting a horror flick or anything even resembling one. It doesn't really know what it wants to be. Partly a touching story but with added almost "scary" elements to hold the genre classification of a Stephen King project. Nothing scary actually happens. It spends most of its time building a bond between the two main characters, an old billionaire with a checkered past and controversial business practices, and the boy he hired to read to him. Honestly, I think the film would have worked better if they completely removed the wannabe "horror" angle all together. And the anti cell phone message gets a bit heavy handed, ESPECIALLY the last line of the movie. We get it. Don't expect horror and maybe it's watchable.
This show was so close to being cool. The concept is good. Visually it's excellent. Good graphics, creative camera angles, scene transitions and solid camera work. Music is hit and miss. But the real flaw of the show is the insanely cringy dialogue. It's soooo bad. A couple of the actors are also particularly awful (I won't spoil who) but it's made worse by the terrible dialogue. I won't say the writing as a whole is bad because the story is fine. Like I said, so close. IMDB tries to limit the bad reviews by increasing the required characters for each review. I'm not trying to trash this show at all, it's worth a watch. Just should have been better.
