This episode is probably the single most interesting in any show, it mixes two very interesting story plot devices 1) The groundhog day 2) dealing with depression and self harm which I've never seen done in any media. The show is setup in a very good way. I have one concern that the show might get convoluted if the alien tries to solve every characters problem. I think if the show just focuses on one conflict and shows why it's not very easy to solve such things just like the scene where the alien realises that it can't patch things up. But if the show essentially becomes about the alien fixing everyone's lives, the emotional impact of the whole show would reduce. Rather I hope the show focuses on just Takopi.
The question one must ask themselves is, can a place, a journey change a man.
Some of wilder's characters don't change and are flawed but human filled with compassion and love. Jack lemmon's character isn't one of those but he changes through the movie by facing a lot challenges both in form of the red to tape to move his father's body and in handling business with Pamela.
He starts out as righteous and judges his father and pamela but ends up doing the same towards the end and becomes more flawed and human.
This is not the most funny or the most romantic but it is very human like most of wilder's movies.
And irony doesn't end there. Once a deported criminal becomes the highest officer in the US embassy and is draped in the American flag.
There are some standard comedy of errors type stuff but those match any of wilder's other movies.
A solid movie but not outstanding.
