  • This is the version of SNL we need.

I'm not big on topical humor. As far as news and current events go, I'll seek out that information in my own time. I don't really like it in my comedy. Comedy is supposed to be an escape.

Too often, and especially in the opening skit, SNL tries a little too hard for a grab at "social relevance" and it almost never pays off. At least in my opinion.

I'm rating this episode an 8 because it's the kind of random, wacky, unhinged comedy that made me love SNL in the first place. A bungie gym, a dog park, a def jam coffee shop, and Timmy farting in some old lady's face to save her life? Insane. And I loved every second of it. These are skits you send to your friends because they're so ridiculously fun. More of this vibe, SNL. Please.

Timothee makes for an ideal host. You can tell he loves hosting because he just gets to "buy into it" and be a goofball for a night. He'll probably hit the Five Timers Club pretty quickly at the rate he's going. And more power to him. He fits right in.

  • Charming! A future summer classic!

I enjoyed so much about this movie. Considering I grew up in the same time period, a lot of it was spot on as far as the setting is concerned. The cast is all great. There needs to be more movies like this. In a world of superhero franchises, remakes, reboots, sequels, etc. A standalone original idea like this is very welcome. Definitely a great movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon in the summer.

I have 2 gripes. The first being the age of the 2 main characters. A lot of what they were getting themselves into didn't feel like things 2 kids that age would do. Aging them 1-2 years would have made that more believable. And then there's the plot twist with about 20 minutes left that shifts the entire mood of the movie. It was well done and everything, but I'm not entirely sure we needed something that heavy for what it accomplished in the movie. Sure, something was needed to create a reconciliation with the main characters. But it felt a little too serious and a little too late in the movie to spring on the audience. It felt tacked on for the sake of an emotional punch. But it doesn't ruin the movie.

While very enjoyable, I acknowledge this movie is very boy-specific. I watched it feeling like I was watching the way I used to talk and interact with my friends at that age. That's a large part of its charm. I'd sum it up as saying it's kind of like Superbad meets Adventureland meets Dazed and Confused. If any of those were worth your time, this definitely is as well.

  • A Lesson In Adjusting Your Expectations.

This film, at the moment, should be considered Christopher Nolan's masterpiece. That's right. Christopher Nolan, master of epic action movies, has made his best work in what should be considered a hybrid of historical biopic and political thriller. This movie has more in common with something like JFK or All The President's Men than it does with Inception or The Dark Knight Trilogy. If you realize that ahead of time, or can come to grips with it while viewing, you'll be handsomely rewarded.

With any movie, there are a few things even a huge admirer can disagree with. I'll say what most people said, it's way too long for lacking the usual action of a Nolan movie. I noticed at least 20-30 minutes worth of material that could have been cut without sacrificing the story or the tension. I watched this at home and decided to split it in half and watch it on 2 separate nights. So maybe that's why it didn't feel like a massive undertaking for me. I think if I would have had to sit through it in the theater, I might be less pleased with it.

The cast was hit or miss for me. The main cast were all fantastic, with all their awards and nominations well deserved. I'm a massive fan of RDJ's non-Marvel work, and I think this is his best performance. I just didn't need a big name for almost EVERY role. I could have done without Jack Quaid, Josh Peck, and even Gary Oldman. I'd even argue Florence Pugh's entire storyline could have been cut.

So why my high rating? Those 2 things are my only real bones to pick in what I think is still a completely engrossing thriller. I have to make special mention of the score for making normal, dialogue-focused scenes feel extremely intense. I'm a big fan of history-based movies. So admittedly, the subject matter was already in my wheelhouse. Casual Nolan fans might have been mad if they expected big action sequences. But if you haven't seen it yet, and understand it for what it actually IS, you will be very pleasantly surprised.
