  • A Devastating Return to Form

After the eventful climax of the previous episode, one might have expected the show to sidestep the emotional fallout, as genre television so often does. In fact, last week's installment whilst good, felt somewhat underwhelming precisely because it hesitated to dwell on the impact of it's events. But this episode not only acknowledges that void, it fills it to the brim.

What unfolds is, without question, one of the most emotionally charged and thematically rich episodes of the series to date, rivaling (and perhaps even surpassing) standout entries like 1x6: Things Fall Apart and 1x9: A Hero Falls. (The latter remains an exceptional episode marred only by a title that telegraphs too much too soon, misstep in an otherwise incredible first season.)

This hour is not about spectacle or momentum. It's about grief, raw, and shared across both sides of the narrative divide. The brilliance lies in how the writing refuses to moralize; instead, it presents protagonists and antagonists alike as fractured human beings navigating impossible choices. By doing so, it reframes the conflict not as good versus evil, but as a tragic collision of loyalty, fear, and emotional inheritance.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the portrayal of King Shaka. Lemogang Tsipa delivers what is arguably his strongest performance of the season. Gone is the stoic facade, in its place, a man laid bare by sorrow, doubt, and the unrelenting burden of leadership. His portrayal in this episode offers glimpses of both mythic regality and unmistakable vulnerability, injecting the character with a complexity that feels long overdue.

To reveal more would be to diminish the experience, so I won't spoil. Needless to say, this is a phenomenal episode of television.

  • ABSOLUTE CINEMA

I haven't left a review for an episode in VERY long time, so I think that just goes to show how brilliant this episode is. This episode was so good that if no other episode after this surpasses it, I genuinely wouldn't mind.

They were able to turn one of my best skepticism for this entire show's premise and turn in into a genuinely riveting aspect for the show.

Not to mention, just the clever writing over all. There are so many scenes that just feels as if the writers are actually paying attention to what transpires in the show, and use these hinted story elements to deliver some humanizing and surprisingly captivating moments. (Not trying to get too much into spoilers, but they've given Detective Wallace much more humanizing character this episode, as a common complaint which I somewhat agree with is that she's "TOO perfect" a detective, but now they've reworked that in a a much more believable and personal way which just strengthens her overall character.

And Harrison. GOOD LORD. I know this has already been said, so what I'm saying is nothing new but he is such an improvement here than in New Blood, you can't help but feel for him here, and his internal struggle is actually becoming one of the best aspects of this show, which leads to some of the most emotional and beautiful scenes this episode has shown us.

This has to be one of the best episodes of Dexter put to screen. Impeccable writing, impeccable acting. Impeccable episode.

  • Great start to the Season

The episode opens at a deliberate, thoughtful pace, perfectly fitting after the weighty events of the previous season. Rather than rushing forward, the story allows the consequences of prior actions to settle in, giving space for characters and politics to evolve naturally.

The dialogue is sharp and layered, often carrying unspoken subtext, very reminiscent of the early seasons of Game of Thrones. Every conversation feels meaningful, with the actors delivering their lines with impressive nuance and restraint.

What stands out is the introduction of new layers of tension. The challenges facing the central leadership come not only from outside threats but also from simmering tensions within, adding rich complexity to the unfolding power struggle.

An excellent and mature start to the season. If this level of writing and character work continues, we're in for a compelling ride.
