What a disappointing sequel. A haphazard plot. Boring writing. Not funny. Not particularly creative, which was the main draw of the first one. The Burton style was only half there. This just came across as yet another money-grubbing reboot. I'm tired of this endless parade of movies trying to recapture the magic of the past. It's not going to happen. Everything about this felt wrong. It, strangely, had a big budget look but the actual content screamed chintzy B-movie. The whole thing came across as weirdly superficial. Where the first one had a dark charm to it, this just fell flat. I felt like I was watching some crappy fan-cut YouTube creation-except the cinematography and cast were somehow top notch. I'm not sure how they got so many talented actors to agree to this farce, but they were one of the few bright spots. They just couldn't save it. Good actors can't make up for bad writing. The fact that this has a score of 6.8 makes me think most people's brains have been fried by the internet, because this was NOT a good movie. It wasn't even decent or okay. That's two hours of my life I'll never get back. Look elsewhere if you wanted to be entertained.
This is by far one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen. And I'm a horror fan, so I've seen some super disturbing movies. I came into this one blind-no clue what it was about-and I was uncomfortable from the very start (at first for reasons I couldn't quite name...just a general sense of unease and confusion mixed with suspicion). I won't go into the details for anyone avoiding spoilers, but this movie made me physically sick, and I'm not particularly squeamish. It's not a gory movie, and they don't show the most violent acts, but the onslaught of hatred is just never ending, and the bombardment of insane rhetoric and mental gymnastics (from the characters) is relentless. I feel like I need to go take a shower. Some horror movies are just a little too realistic for my taste (and I had no idea that's what this was when I started watching). I'm not sure if everyone would categorize this as horror, but I don't know what else to call it.
