Originally I thought "Cool, a show about witness protection. This I something we haven't seen really fleshed out in detail." WOW! I was wrong. Instead it's a whiney and horribly written series about basically nothing. Great performances by actors way better than the writing. Five decent episodes with an ending that shows no writing freshness or intelligence. Do not waste your time on this series. After six episodes you are left wondering who are the good guys, who are the bad guys and what was the purpose? And where is the sole survivor of the witness protection plot?? Please do not let there be a season two!! Let these actors thrive in better plots!
There are thousands of hours of medical dramas produced already. These 10 episodes will not be a waste of time. Overall, every story is interesting and sometimes fresh except for the overarching story of Danny and Xander. They are two very skilled actors playing two complex characters stuck in a storyline that would have been more comfortable in an 80's Shapiro (Dynasty) version of this show. The flashbacks became annoying rather than intriguing. The stories involving Harper, Soriano and Chan separate this show from any other in this genre and need to be applauded. At times I think the writers tried to distance this show from "Grey's Anatomy" which ironically made it seem more similar. And there is nothing wrong with that! If there is a season two I hope it drops the whole Phillips oligarchy story and focuses on good doctors doing good things with less manufactured drama.
I waited for years for this story to become a series. I found the book to be a fantastic tale told in a way to see both sides of a story. The struggles and triumphs of the two young characters exemplified how courageous people can be in extraordinary circumstances. The series missed this completely. Primarily because it was a glorification of bad stereotypes that should have been removed from films and television years ago. Releasing a series set in occupied France and not using the language of the setting gives this production a cheap and almost satirical feel. Mark Ruffalo gave a fantastic performance. Young Marie and teenage Werner were excellent characters performed by skillful actors. They certainly captured the spirit of the book behind a disappointing adaptation.
