I'll admit, after about an hour and a half I was starting to get a little worried that this was just about world building, which, don't get me wrong was entertaining and did have some great moments to keep me interested, but the last hour to hour and a half saved this movie and more. The action sequences, emotions, cinematography, score, and so much more came together so incredibly to make a truly memorable movie. In my opinion it far surpassed the original and also sets up sequels really well, as we now know the characters better, and I'm excited to rewatch this before the third movie comes out.
After watching this, I came here to give it an easy 10, expecting it to be another 9.0+ episode, or at least like 8.8, but I was so surprised to see it at an 8.1. The idea and concept of the 5 billion Morty's was so funny and interesting, and literally spanning a whole lifetime of Rick as Roy trying to save Morty and escape was so fun to watch. And while Summer's die hard was not as complex, it was still really entertaining and funny. Are you all seriously gonna tell me that this episode was worse than Vindicators? Because, by far it is better and I'd compare this in quality to the opener of this season, or season 5's opener, and its' a great standalone episode. I hope we got a lot of canon this season, but we need classic rick and morty episodes like this too.
I'll admit, I had higher expectations going into this, and was thoroughly disappointed by the first two episodes. Of course, as you've probably heard, the huge budget does make some scenes pretty pleasing to watch, but this can't make up for the lack of story or interest in the characters so far. Maybe this is due to the fact that there are four separate storylines going on, each with a similar amount of screentime. This cuts down what should be 2 hours of story to 30 minutes of four stories. This makes the two hours feel like a worthless investment, giving us nothing substantially interesting yet as the stories are just getting set up. However, I will continue to watch, as I'm sure the stories connect and there is a purpose, I just hope I won't need to watch too much more like this before it begins to pay off.
