I'd heard so many good things about Goblin that I've had it on my watchlist for the longest time. Finally got around to watching it over Christmas 2021.
Reflecting on the show overall, it's fascinating how a story can be so complete even without an explicit antagonist. Instead, what drove the story forward were the little interrelationships among the characters, and the overarching mystery where bits and pieces were filled in by connecting the present time with the characters' past lives. By the end, you're attached to the characters and feel like they've fully developed over 16 episodes. Fantastic storytelling.
Everything else was great as well - cinematography, the acting (Kim Go-eun is phenomenal), the music.
If you're still waiting for a sign to watch this show, this is it. Go watch Goblin. You are in for a wonderful ride.

Giving 3 stars just for the aesthetics - the cinematography and OST is good. Locations are nice as well. But that's it. The writing is abysmal. Complete lack of character development - the main characters gained nothing over 10 episodes. A lot of scenes felt forced and seemed like a half-hearted attempt just to move the plot forward. The story of the supporting cast was much more interesting than the main story.
It's understandable why they cut the number of episodes and why the ratings weren't so good. The beginning is undeniably slow, a little weird, and confusing, and you end up with more questions than answers. I was still kind of lost by around the 4th and 5th episodes.
BUT once you get past that, you realize that this is actually a really well thought out story. It all comes together toward the end. There's a consistent theme of dealing with grief and eventually overcoming it. The visuals (cinematography, locations, colors) are just absolutely beautiful, and the feels from the soundtracks are going to stay with me for a while. The acting is realistic and never over the top.
Overall, I'd give this a rating of 8.5. Recommended for those looking for a meaningful show to watch.
