First i would like to mention that i have read the books. I am a fan!
Now that this is over i will begin! If someone asked me shall i watch this series i would ask back two things. Have you read the books? If yes then the next question would be, did you like them? If yes i would recommend not to see the series. If the answer to the second question was no then i would ask the person to judge for him/herself. Now if the answer to the first question was no my second question would be do you enjoy existential gay dramas adding bits and pieces of hypersexual teenage angst and slow pacing dialogues?
You get the idea!
1) New Orleans! A beautiful city that i have visited once, since i am not an american. It was the Mardi Gras. There were neighborhoods there that you could actually sense the early 10s and 20s of the 20th century. In the show it is almost forced! And something was missing of the era. If you dont know what visit the city. Walk and breathe the air there. But nay! Let's shove something in our consumers throat.
2) Even if i was not a fan of the books, i consider myself open-minded. I said i will watch the series even though in the first episode the lore was destroyed! If you dont know what i mean read the books please! And how will you continue the story when... Let's make a new story. Ok! Not an original adaptation, perhaps some new ideas on the vampire myth. Nope! Adding new powers out of nowhere i am asking myself why are the vampires not ruling the world? They can stop the bleeping time! Now there is an idea!
3) I read some high rate reviews 8, 9, 10. In a couple of them i saw that Anne Rice authorised this. There is also the fact that she is an executive producer. It is very funny since miss Rice died (God rest her soul) in December of 2021 due to complications of a stroke she had... WHEN? I can also accept the fact that miss Rice wanted to introduce the homosexuality that is heavily implied in a book she wrote at 1973. But if you read the entirety of the books and have half a brain you can understand things better. Also it doesnt take a genius to comprehend that in the 70s you were still a queer to at least 75% of the world and not gay. Think people and then write your letters. Concluding "I" believe that the screenwriters want to "catch" a bigger percentage of the viewers. And "I" wonder how many books of said viewers read average per year. For myself i will answer at least 15 new books and i will also read some old ones for an overall of at least 30 to 35 per year. But that's just me. In this era where entertainment and infotainment rule, where old ideas are radicalised and new "impromptu ideas" become the norm, where the gothic element of poetry and fiction is replaced with pseudoeroticism i dare say the world has changed.
4) I want to say that english is not my primary language. I can speak and understand and even watch movies and series without subs but i am not an expert so i apologise for any errors in grammar.
5)The lack of acting of the major characters? They forced them to be gay! Not to think it, to pace it slowly, to make it happen through bromance and romance first. How can one act if forced. No facial expression, blank staring and oh wait! Someone just destroyed your character arc while you were building for a couple of episodes and made you change entirelly. What was that? You cant get sympathy when you build this thing and few episodes later you destroy it saying: Well what the heck? Bad script? Poor? Writers forgot because they were in a hurry? Did Anne Rice's ghost appeared and haunted them? Hope for the last!
Anyhow! If you are still reading this then you are in luck! I am almost finished. If the series wanted to adapt a ton of lore according to miss Rice wishes they are playing you. They didn't! If the series wanted to set an alternative prospective of miss Rice books then they tried and failed. Not only they mispresent a fine era of a city, but they also try to force-feed cultural ideas that those days DID NOT exist.
PS: In our time the worst thing is that illiteracy makes for a good audience. Yes you read well. As i said if you have half a brain you will understand!
PS2: Long live Maharet!

To be honest i am writing this review after i only watched the first season.
Instead of seeing a series that will inspire us, i find a lot repetitions of the same motive. I am not an American and i do not know black culture. Thankfully i try to learn and understand for in my past i had to defend people against racism in my country and not only of colour but also obesity, theological beliefs etc.
A high school drama that is forcing people to digest high and valuable ideas is not a drama but a comic tragedy!
The cast cannot even mimic the fake emotions...
With one exception. Female actress Bre-Z shows her talent and delivers the lines with true pathos/emotion. In adittion the screenwritter who is responsible for her character does an amazing job. In almost every episode of the first season there is a drop of "Coop" wisdom, masterfully spoken under the right cicumstances! Isn't it a pity that the lessons aren't learnt from the rest of the cast or laziness?
No other characters evolve or even try to understand the simplest of feelings. No more of the complicated ones.
So 6 stars because of Tamia/Bre-Z. If not for her my rating would be 3,5 rounded down.
