The show has been cast very with talented actors. They shine best when they are working through ethical and moral conflict -which is what Star Trek has typically been about. Ad Astra was a fantastic episode as was the show's pilot to name a few. Somehow the writers in season 3 have gotten away from what has endeared Star Trek to fans.
Four-and-a-Half Vulcans is another comedy episode with zero space exploration and character development. The episode makes no social commentary nor does it put the characters in any real dilemma.
This comedic episode is OK, but it doesn't come close to the sharpness of "Those Old Scientists," nor does it reach the timeless humor of TOS's "The Trouble with Tribbles."

Leave it to the writers of Strange New Worlds to come up with a pretty decent premise for an episode but then proceed to screw it all up. The episode has an Encounter At Farpoint feel to it, but unfortunately the story kept getting interrupted with this documentary style episode. Ortega's brother is such a pointless character, which made the episode kind of pointless. You never really feel for the creature as the story is constantly interrupted. Just 3 episodes left in season 3. What else can the writers screw up?
By far the best episode from season 3 so far. No comedic scenes or silly relationship plots, just a straight forward Trek story line of the crew fighting an unknown planet killer sized ship.
The episode highlights James T Kirk's transition to taking command and realizing he has to live with his decisions - good or bad. Keep in mind he is technically still a Lieutenant Commander.
We get to see the early makings of the famous Enterprise crew from TOS and how James T Kirk begins to earn their trust.
Anson Mount as always is a stand out in his role as Captain Pike. The rest of the cast is just as good.
