Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett were a great writing team. They managed to build a movie with two distinct explanations for what even happened therein while avoiding major plot holes. Most Hollywood writers cannot avoid plot holes even in much simpler stories.
Go compare this to the remake. Without O'Bannon and Shusett, the story was completely botched and makes no sense.
This is amusing because this is a Philip K Dick adaptation, and PKD threw plot holes into his stories on purpose. O'Bannon, a PKD disciple, was, from what I've seen, pretty good at avoiding plot holes in his scripts.
I point all this out because it's a "pet peeve" of mine that sci fi movies so often have glaring plot holes. This is one that I think is pretty solid, and for that it's worthy of extra praise.

This is one of the best movies belonging to that genre where a character loses their eyes and the main villain's name starts with the letters STI. It's second only to the phenomenal Howling II.
This and Honor and Glory are great to watch together. A lot of familiar faces appear in both movies and it's nice to see John Miller play both hero and villain.

And hey, that got me to watch and rewatch numerous times, but overall the movie is not so good.
How to get Joker out of the bank? Eh whatever, have him hop on a bus.
Batman abandons a roomful of people to save Rachel? Who cares if that's in line with Batman's character? It works for Joker because he will punish him for that later.
I put up with those things because Joker's scenes are fun to watch, but towards the end when Joker's grand plan with the boats makes no sense, the whole movie falls off the rails for me.
7/10 for entertaining Joker scenes, but be wary of Christopher Nolan movies which do not have Joker or Heath Ledger.
