This movie has compelled me to write my first review. It definitely not the worst movie I've ever watched, but I do have a lot to say about it.
My first critique concerns the films pretentious nature. This movie has no right to be as pompously pretentious as it is. To me it very much comes across as the "I'm 14 and this is deep" meme. The first 40 minutes or so are spent building the incredibly "nuanced" message that: "phone not so good for society". Which is very surface level, while also feeling tiered. It's also only really brought up again in the end, and is never concluded in a meaningful way.
Okay sure the film has a bit of a long setup, but after that you'll surely get rewarded with the horror movie promised, right? No, not even a little. This movie's attempts at incorporating horror is beyond half-arsed.
The way the "horror" happened in the movie was kinda reminiscent of "Wish upon" but somehow much tamer, while also somehow feeling even more inconsequential. Nothing about this movie is affective as a horror movie, the "concept" feels outplayed and stupid, again functionally identical to "Wish upon". Furthermore the scares in this movie are... oh wait there are none, same goes for any tension building scenes.
Which leads into my next critique regarding the none existing urgency of the plot. This is a large part to why I find the movie to be so boring. Additionally the movie really doesn't have an actual conflict to get invested in. A story, in my opinion, doesn't contain a legitimate conflict if all it takes for it to be resolve is to literally stop the very voluntary and avoidable action your are continually making. And I would for the third time draw parallels to the movie "Wish upon" which is plagued by the same issue. Moreover the plot is void of any cohesive through line, it feels like a mishmash of a bunch of different events.
The story structure results in a inexcusably boring movie. I'm already having trouble remembering what happened in the movie and I'm writing this right after watching it.
Conclusion: If you like movies with no conflict or point, besides some shallow attempt at societal commentary, and horror more akin to "Teletubbies" than "The Conjuring", well then this movie might be right up ur ally.
In all seriousness it it completely fine if some people like this movie or even love it. I just think it's really bad.
