This movie wanted to offer something different. People online seem to say this movie is interesting because it focuses on the spouses and families of the soldiers involved and not on the futility of war or the horrors of war and stuff. But what this movie really is is one big fight scene that lacks quality. Theres just barely any substance in anything Mel Gibson says, and his lines often come out as cliché to me. And the supposed "focus on the families" this movie promised just did not really matter. First, there was bad pacing, so it felt like there wasn't enough time spent analyzing the effects on them. Second, the actresses did not give particularly convincing performances in my opinion. And to come back to "one big fight scene... I think it was not very well filmed and just very bland. The coloring isn't great, the camera could've been handled better, and I would've have loved to have a bit more realism. I mean, most of the time, it was like fifty Vietnamese soldiers running mindlessly towards their target and American soldiers just all group up in one spot. I don't mean that movies must be accurate and realistic, but there's a certain standard that must be met for me. Another thing I didn't like was that the film's own message doesn't even feel clear within the movie. It kind of feels like it's not sure if it's an anti-war movie or a pro-war movie. Anyways, I didn't like this movie and don't recommend it unless you're like me and must watch every single Vietnam war movie...
Besides the actual quality of the movie, I freaking LOVE the heck out of this movie. Ive always been fascinated with the JFK assassination. This movie just captured everything interresting about it too. Between the conspiracy of different individuals with political and military involvement. Not only is the directing style good and sort of classic but it fits the movie's aesthetic. Pretty much everything is good in my opinion. The performances are very good, the atmosphere is out of this world, the editing and cinematography have a clear aesthetic goal, the music is very spot on and the plot is very good.
I think this movie did a very nice and fresh (back then) take on the JFK assassination. Instead of watching another documentary that will just repeat what the other 500 documentaries have said, I think this movie delivers a satisfying and very stylistic approach that still has a lot of real info in it.

I literally just came here to say how freaking bad the 25 first minutes are. Its a movie about the 1920s but it has edm and rap music from the 2010s. Its so awful just for that. And it somehow feels like the characters and the plot are made for 2010 and not 1920. Its just really, really bad. Ive never actually done a review for something I did not finish but this movie's first 25 minutes are so horrible i just cant help it. I dont understand why things like this are even made. Instead of marketing itself as that it brings in the whole 1920 aesthetic only to then transfer into the 2010 party aesthetic. Bad, just, so bad... Just please, if you can, STAY AWAY FROM THIS MOVIE.
