Wyatt Earp - Kurt Russell - was a well known lawman in Dodge City. Now, he just wants to find silver and lead a quiet, family life in Tombstone Arizaona. Family includes wife Mattie and two brothers. Once there, Earp also is delighted to find old pal Doc Holliday - Val Kilmer. But, whoa. There never was a more unpeaceful town as Tombstone. A ruthless gang, the Cowboys, rule with gunfire against anyone and everyone. Earp discovers too late he may not be " retired " after all. Somebodies have got to STOP the Cowboys. How about a meeting at the OK Corral? Firstly, here is the Wild Wild West in living color. History comes alive. Secondly, what a fabulous cast. There's Russell, Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Chatlton Heston, and more. Yes, there's violence so be warned. But, here is one of the best Western films ever made.
Little Yuri Zhivago is orphaned when his Father commits suicide by jumping off a train. Happily, family friends the Gromekos take the boy to live with them and their daughter Tonya in Moscow. Yuri grows up to become a physician. Meanwhile, 17 year old Lara - Keira Knightley - lives in poverty with her Mother, a dressmaker. Mama is involved with a smarmy businessman, Komoravsky. As Lara is very beautiful, Mr K soon seduces the young girl. When her Mother learns of this, she tries to kill herself but Dr Zhivago helps save her life. Lara marries a young Bolshevik, Pasha and they move to a small town farther west. At the same time, Yuri marries Tonya and has a son. WW1 breaks out and the Russian Revolution follows soon after. This turns everyone's lives topsy turvy, especially when Yuri and Lara meet serving the wounded Russian soldiers. As the Soviet Union takes power, will anyone's life be peaceful? This fine adaptation of Pasternaks novel can stand beside Leans classic 1965 movie without shame. The actors are younger, giving a fresh feeling to the story. The entire cast is wonderful. Likewise the scenery, costumes and recreation of the time period are grand. Bits of real footage are mingled with the new at various moments. Historical film fans will welcome this one with gusto.
Norma Jean - Ana de Armas - is the daughter of a woman named Gladys. The mother is mentally ill and tells Norma Jean her father is famous but she cannot reveal his name. When she tries to drown NJ, the little 7yr old girl flees to neighbors. Thus, her Mother goes to a mental hospital and Norma Jean lives as an unofficial adopted child. Flash forwarding years, Norma becomes Marilyn Monroe. Her rise to stardom is accompanied by unhappy marriages, a miscarriage and a nightmarish relationship with JFK. All the while, Norma searches for her father, while boozing and drugging from the pain of a public image which is not who she is. Wow. This film, adapted from a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, may not have the whole truth but it certainly has the ring of authenticity. The world " loved " Marilyn but she didn't love herself, wanting to be only Norma Jean. The sensational cast and script is head turning and heart grabbing. Beware: this is a very depressing movie.
Katniss - Jennifer Lawrence - lives in a dystopian future of the USA. The Government has quashed all rebellion and most folks live in poverty. As a horrendous reminder to those who would fight for freedom, the Gov has established yearly "games". 2 children, ages 12-17, are chosen from each of the 12 districts to fight with deadly weapons until only one child is left alive. Horrific. 16 year old Katniss is the provider for her weak mother and shy younger sister Prim. When Prim is randomly chosen to be in the yearly tournament, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Also chosen is Peta, a male friend of Kat. All contestants are whisked off to the Capital city for training . The sadistic leaders will cheer them on. As the games begin, Katniss and Peta escape the initial round of killings. But, they will need all of their smarts and skills to remain alive. Can one of them make it as the "champion"? OK, this film based on a popular book has a great cast, intrigue and fine special effects. However, the reality of children fighting to kill each other is just not acceptable. While the film has its many fans, this viewer isn't one of them.
The film opens on Connie Corleones wedding day, a happy occasion, no? Yes, but. Her father Vito - Marlon Brando - is the head of the Corleone crime family in New York. While Connie is getting into her wedding gown, Papa is handling business in his office. A man begs Vito to beat up the two wicked men who disfigured his daughter. His wish is granted. Next, a family friend and famous singer wants a movie role he can't attain. Vito soon sends his adopted son Tom to Hollywood, where the producer is given an offer he can't refuse. Don Vito has several sons, one Santino who is the heir apparent. Another son, Michael - Al Pacino - has chosen not to be part of the crime family life but live a "regular" life. Yet, when Vito is seriously wounded in a shooting ambush, Michael must re-evaluate his decision to walk away. This is especially so when Sonny / Santino may not have the cool head needed to be the next Don. What will Michael do? This classic film has a great style, story and cast. It was especially wonderful for Brando to re-appear on the big screen after an absence of years. It's one detraction is violence so if that is bothersome, stay away. For most viewers, however, it will be a great movie experience.
Will - Ben Foster - is a Veteran with stress disorder. He and his 17 year old daughter Thomasin live way off the grid in a huge public park near Portland, Oregon. Their campsite is carefully hidden. The viewer gets the feeling they've been there at least 2 years. From time to time, Will goes to the VA in Portland for checkups. They give him anxiety and depression drugs, which he then sells to other vets for money. Thus, he and Tom have food and necessities. One awful day, a jogger spies Tom and tells authorities. Will and Tom are found and taken to a shelter. After long questioning, they are given a place to live on a tree farm. Will is to work for the owner and Tom must go to school. Will this work out? This unusual film has a heart gripping story, excellent actors and fantastic scenery. It also has much to say about freedom and choices. Make it your next movie.
Patience - Halle Berry - is a shy graphic artist for a Beauty firm called Hedare. The company is getting ready to launch a touted beauty cream called Beau-fine. Therefore, Patience must create a winning ad campaign. Meanwhile, Patience hears a cat outside her high rise and wants to rescue it. That's how she meets Tom - Benjamin Bratt - a cop who fears she is near suicide jumper. They like the looks of each other. Unhappily, Patience must redo her art design, boss's order. When she tries to deliver the new graphics Iate at night, she overhears the tragic secret. Beau-fine is deadly with continued use. They soon bump off Patience but she is reborn by the cat she tried to save. Now, Patience is Catwoman and she can fight the bigwigs at Hedare. Who will win? This film is a misfire in spite of the gorgeous Berry and a fine supporting cast. The script is poor and silly. It's too bad. Yet, if you are a fan of Superhero films, don't skip it. It has some good moments.
Aaron Falk - Eric Bana - grew up in a rural Australian area north of Melbourne. But, when he was a teenager, a close female friend named Emily was murdered. The killer wasn't found but many folks fingered Aaron. Thus, he and his father left the small town. Now, 20 years later, Aaron is a detective in Melborne. News comes from his hometown that a close friend Luke murdered his wife and son before turning the gun on himself. A farmer, Luke and everyone was suffering from an ongoing drought; gossip is money trouble was the reason. However, Luke's parents contact Aaron. They don't believe their son did this and want Aaron to investigate his friends death. Aaron goes back to try. But, tensions become worse as folks haven't forgotten Emily's death. Will the truth be revealed? This fine film has a sensational story and setting. Here is a look at an Australia few folks know, adding great interest. Bana is wonderful in a complex role and there are twists and turns in abundance. Thirsty for a great movie? Find The Dry.
Ricki - Meryl Streep - is the lead singer for a struggling bar band called The Flash. She has a semi-mate Greg - Rick Springfield - who also plays in the group. Alas, their gigs don't pay all of the bills so Ricki also works in a grocery store. However, we learn soon enough she has a past. Once married to Pete and the mother of three children, she left them behind to pursue her musical dreams. Contact has been sporadic. Yet, Pete now phones Ricki and asks for help. Daughter Julie has been jilted by her husband and is having a breakdown. Can Ricki fly to Indiana and show love and support for her troubled child? She says yes. But, once there, Julie gives her a cold reception, as does her two sons. Will Ricki be of any use to her estranged children ? This ok film has a wonderful cast and something to say about family ties and personal dreams. Although not a surefire winner, it's a worthwhile watch.
Long ago, King Stefan and his Queen rejoice at the birth of a daughter, Princess Aurora. They host a huge Christening party with 3 special guests: Fairies Flora Fauna and Merriweather. Also at the event is King Hubert who has a young son Prince Philip. The newborn baby is promised as a future wife to the Prince. At the party, Flora gives Aurora the gift of beauty while Fauna gives her the gift of song. But, horrors. Arriving at this moment is evil fairy Maleficent. She wasn't invited but she gives the baby a gift, too. When she turns 16, Aurora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel needle and die. Laughing, Maleficent leaves. Although Merriweather can't totally change the spell, she alters it. Aurora will not die but sleep until awakened by true loves kiss. Dear dear. Thinking it best, the three Fairies hide Aurora in a forest cottage for 16 years. But, on her birthday, Aurora meets Philip by chance in the forest. Love blossoms. Yet, that night Aurora will be returned safely to King Stefans palace. Does Maleficent have time to make her spell come true? She does. Can true love win? This film, which I saw at age 5, was the first movie I loved. My favorite parts were the three loveable Fairies and the beautiful princess. However, Maleficent scared me badly, especially when she turned into a dragon. Nevertheless, my Father bought us the book so we could relive the movie again. This Disney classic is still lovely in every way.
Gail - Meryl Streep - is a history teacher in Boston. But, she was once a very skilled white water rafting guide. Today, she is married to Tom, an architect. Lately, Tom has been immersed in his work, neglecting his family. There's preteen son Roarke and little gal Willa. Now on summer vacation, Gail, Tom and Roarke are going on a river trip to Idaho. Unhappily, Tom backs out, for his job. Gail takes Roarke anyway, explaining they will go a fair distance in semi dangerous water but will not enter The Gauntlet, where river guides never go. As they begin, 2 men are making the same journey, Terry and Wade. They seem friendly. Surprisingly, Tom joins his family, making Gail happy. But, Terry and Wade are revealed as wanted men. Moreover, they kidnap the family and insist Gail take them thru the Gauntlet. Will anyone live? This thriller on whitewater rapids is well conceived, with breathtaking stunts and scenes. Then, too, the cast of Streep, Kevin Bacon, David Straitharn and Joseph Mazzello is terrific. Director Curtis Hansen has fashioned a fine flick so make time for a showing.
The US President - Alan Alda - has fallen in the polls. The Cold War has ended and peace is reigning in the 80s. However, weapons plants are shuttering, especially one near Niagara Falls. This leads former workers to die by jumping over the Falls, as no new jobs are available. This makes the Prez even more unpopular. A new plan must be developed. One of the President's close advisors sees a Niagara sheriff - John Candy - arrested for insulting Canadian beer at a hockey game. Oh ho here it is. Let's start a new cold war with Canada, maybe even have a skirmish or 2. This will help put our Prez in a new light. What could go wrong? This zany and funny movie was written by none other than Michael Moore, of Roger and Me and Bowling for Columbine. It's got terrific one liners and a great cast. It was one of the last movies for Candy, making it extra special. Canadian Bacon is film to lighten up a bad, bad day.
Charley Partanna - Jack Nicholson - is the Godson and rising hit man for mob boss Prizzi. He's tough and smart. Once, he was almost married to Prizzis daughter MaeRose but things went South. At a wedding, Charley sees a lovely lady in lavender and he's smitten. Unhappily, this woman Irene - Kathleen Turner - is also a hired assassin. Nevermind, the two are soon a couple. But, bliss is brief as Irene was a participant in Prizzi losing $300000. She must pay it back. Things get more complex. Charley's life may be on the line. Who wins in a life or death duo? This funny and intriguing story is almost a classic in Mafia movies. The script, direction and stars are fantastic. Honest, find the Honor. Or else.
It's the new 21st century in London. But, Sherlock Holmes - Benedict Cumberbatch- is there, as a special consultant to Scotland yard. He has a Website, the Science of Deduction and uses his same brilliant observations to solve crimes. Meanwhile, Dr John Watson was in Afghanistan and suffers from a limp and nightmares. The two become flatmates. Very soon, Lestrade contacts Holmes, as a serial killer is making folks take poison and die. Holmes is avid to help, and naturally finds clues no one else can see. Will the magnificent detective find the killer and prevent more deaths? Bravo I say to this novel reworking of Holmes classic stories. It is faithful to Doyle in so many ways except the time frame. The cast is wonderful while the sets and scripts are top notch. Hunt for this fine series.
In Mississippi, Lenora/Lenny - Diane Keaton - has sent a telegram to California. She wants middle Sister Meg to return home. There's a crisis, you see. Youngest Sister Becky/ Babe has just landed in jail, for shooting and severely wounding her local bigwig hubby. These three sisters were raised by their Grandpa. You see, their father took off and their mother committed suicide. Lenny was shy and stayed home to take care of Grandpa. Meg was wild, love crazy and fled to California to become a singer while youngest Sis Babe married at 18. Now, Babe may go to prison. More secrets are coming. Does Babe have a defense? This crazy sad and funny film seems straight out of Faulkner or Welty. It's a bizarre comedy, Southern style. The three stars, Keaton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek are marvelous while the story has a unique tale of happenings. Sets and costumes are great. It would be a crime to miss this Crimes.
Ree Dolly - Jennifer Lawrence - is a 17 year old girl with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her mother is mentally troubled and lives in her private reality. In addition, Rees father Jessup hasn't been around for three weeks, leaving Ree in charge. This means caring for two younger siblings and her Mother as well. There's very little money in the Ozarks where they all live. Now, a lawman named Baskin comes calling. Jessup was charged with meth cooking but freed on bail. If he doesn't show up for next weeks trial, Ree and the family will lose their house and the surrounding woods. Goodness. Ree believes Jessup may be in hiding and she starts looking. Her uncle Teardrop warns her to stop. But, without the house, the family will be out in the cold. Can Ree find Jessup? This amazing story was written by Daniel Woodrell, one of America's finest modern writers. Read the book, too! Lawrence gives a heartbreaking and brave performance as Ree. The supporting cast, settings and script are all wonderful. Don't miss Winters Bone.
George Banks - Steve Martin - is thinking life is good. Daughter Annie and husband live nearby and son Matty will graduate in a blink of an eye. Then, Annie and Bryan announce they are expecting a baby. This unglued George. He's too young to bea Grandpa! He gets a new haircut and new clothes. And, he gets romantic with wife Nina. Moreover, after yet another home repair, George sells the house and they have 10 days to move. Fortunately, they can stay at Bryan's parents home while these folks are away. Then, Nina learns SHES PREGNANT also. Topsy turvy is Georges life. How can he handle all of this? Here's a funny sequel to the Father of the Bride. George doesnt like change but learns to adapt, just as he did in film one. But, first he drives the family crazy. The great cast also includes funny guys Martin Short and Eugene Levy. No, this isn't Shakespeare. But, giggles will abound when viewing FOTB2.
Greville Wynne - Cumberbatch - is a businessman in 1960. He's married with a preteen son Andrew. Unlike others, Wynne cultivates business in the so-called Eastern block. This means Czechoslavakia, Hungary, Romania etc. Meanwhile, Britain's M16 gets word a top Soviet scientist wants to leave the USSR and seek asylum in England. Now, which undercover agent would be best to arrange this? No one. Instead, they ask Wynne to cultivate the opportunities for the Soviets defection by asking him to transport information. Only Wynne doesn't realize it's more than business! Meanwhile, Greville is away so much his wife guesses an affair is happening. Will the Soviet come out of the cold? This true, sad, amazing story was important in ending the Cuban missile crisis. Wynne suffered for his undercover work while the Soviet paid the ultimate price. Cumberbatch is terrific as the accidental spy. What a history lesson for us all!
In 40s Los Angeles, 2 police officers stage a boxing match to improve the LAPDs image. It works. This duo, Lee - Aaron Eckhart - and Bucky - Josh Harnett become partners. Bucky meets Lees live in gal, Kay - Scarlett Johansson- who is incredibly beautiful. The 3 hang out together frequently. Then, a most sordid murder occurs, the killing of Elizabeth Short - Mia Kershner. Ms Short was an aspiring actress who had appeared in an Xrated movie. Her mutilated body was found in a field, in 2 pieces and with a smile carved into her face. Lee and Bucky become obsessed with finding her killer, which leads to the doorstep of a wealthy heiress - Hilary Swank. But, moving forward, there is a labyrinth of secrets that may drive a wedge between Bucky and Lee. Will the killer be found? This cool looking, stylish film has a knockout cast dressed to the nines. Visually, it's sumptuous. The murder of Ms Short was a real life event that was never solved. Here is a fictional take by famous author James Ellroy on an imaginary version of what might have happened. DePalma the director was criticized heavily for the film, as it didn't make money or bowl anyone over. But, my view, this film is underrated and will fascinate fans of film noir . Watch it !
Lee - Casey Affleck - is barely making it. After a personal tragedy, he lives near Boston and works as a handyman / maintenance worker for several apartment buildings. He calls a small basement apartment home. On the job, he can be surly and rude. Now, he receives word his brother Joe has had a heart attack. Racing to his former home community, Manchester by 5he Sea, Lee finds his brother has died. More importantly, he soon learns he has been appointed guardian of Joe's 16 year old son, Patrick. This creates problems, as Patrick wants to stay in Manchester yet Lee has a job and ties elsewhere. Moreover, Lee is depressed, hardly capable of becoming a good parent to Patrick. Can this work out? This bleak film is not an easy watch yet compelling. Fine performances and coastal scenery are assets. The reality of daily living amid harsh circumstances is well done. If you admire quality filmmaking, put this one on your list.
Otto - Tom Hanks - is an old grouch. He lives in a suburb of Pittsburgh, in a managed group of houses. In reality, Otto really has had sad events recently. His wife of many years passed away and he was forced to retire by the higher ups. Now, he feels useless and deeply sad. But, fate steps in. New neighbors refuse to be unfriendly and the young family slowly warms his heart. He also is befriended by a stubborn cat while a former student of his wife's needs his help also. Once contemplating suicide, will Otto get a new lease on life? This sweet and touching film is based on the best selling Swedish novel, a Man called Ove. It has stayed mostly true to the book, once the change in geography is confirmed. Hanks gives another fine performance with a good supporting cast. The movie is intended to warm the heart and affirm what is good in the human race. It succeeds .
The film, based on a short story by legendary writer Arthur C Clarke, opens in prehistoric times on Earth. A monolith appears as Cave era men gather nearby. Soon, these men can use tools to further advancement. Abruptly, the time changes to 2001. Another monolith has been uncovered on the Moon. It's emitting signals to Jupiter. 5 astronauts, three in hibernation, are sent on a journey to the 5th planet. One is Dave - Keir Dullea. Also onboard is HAL 9000, a supercomputer who has never been wrong. A piece of equipment malfunctions, opening the door to major complications. Soon it's HAL vs Dave. Who will survive? This mind blowing film has a fantastic story and special effects. It asks the viewer to ponder ideas and possible conclusions. It influenced dozens of other films, with the catch phrase I have a bad feeling about this. Also significant is man vs AI. HERE is a film not to miss.
400 years ago, a British ship was attacked off the coast of Africa by brutal pirates. A young lad sees his father and everyone else killed. As the ship wrecks, the young boy washes ashore upon a feared island. But, the natives like the boy and nurse him back to health. They also give him a skull ring, which gives him great strength. He is the first PHANTOM. Now, it's the 1930s and the 21st phantom descendant - Billy Zane - uses his ring and powers to fight evil. But, secretly. In daily life, hes a businessman. Now wealthy Drax - Treat Williams - wants 3 skulls from the Phantoms secret island to rule the World. You can bet Phantom will fight to stop him, while romancing lovely Diana - Kristy Swanson. Who will win? This is quite a fine superhero movie that no one knows. Zane makes a handsome crime fighter while the supporting cast is great. Sets and effects are likewise fine. The one change from the original comic strip is the RING. The original comic only gave the hero brains and martial arts, no powerful ring. But, it is a nice addition, my view. If you've seen Batman, Superman, Dr Stränge etc and need new entertainment, get the Phantom. How tragic there is only one of them.
Newton Davis - Steve Martin - works at a huge Boston architectural firm, as an entry level associate. From a small town 40 miles away, Davis borrows money to build and design a house in his hometown. Wrapping it in a huge bow, Davis proposes to Becky, his girlfriend of many years. She says NO. Heartbroken, Davis is lost in a daze for weeks after. When the firm holds a party for a new building in downtown Boston, Davis meets Gwen - Goldie Hawn. Gwen works as a waitress for the catering firm. A sympathetic ear, Gwen soon hears about the empty house in the small town. Soon, Gwen secretly quits her job and moves into the house, telling townsfolk she's Davis new wife. Davis is furious when he finds out. But, on a trip to tell Gwen to move out, Davis learns his parents already love Gwen. Moreover, Becky looks at him with new eyes. So, Davis tells Gwen she can stay until he can win back Becky. Will this plan work? This funny and clever flick has a stellar comedy plot. Also, Martin and Hawn are humor experts who charm. Viewers will likewise love the beautiful New England setting. And, bonus, right this film is free to stream on YouTube!
There's a new paranormal series on television called Grave Encounters. For the first 5 episodes, a crew headed by a Gung ho ghost hunter named Lance have mesmerized the audience tuning in. But, while filming the 6th episode, the whole crew disappears. The producers go to the location, a huge abandoned psychiatric hospital in Maryland. There they find footage of what happened. There are interviews with different folks during the daytime, like Lance asking a gardener and groundskeeper what they've "seen". Next, the crew record stories of inmates, a girl who committed suicide or an evil Doctor who was killed by patients. Finally, Lance announces to the camera that they are being locked in for a night and will record encounters with ghosts. From that moment, things get worse, worse, worse. What happened during the night? This horrifically scary movie has great imagination and concepts. As a Canadian film, the cast is unknown but terrific. If you like horror films, you shouldn't miss this one. But, it's footage is hard to shake off.
