The Toxic Avenger is a reboot of 1984 cult classic about a janitor who fights crime after he is horribly transformed by toxic chemicals. I never saw the original and not to familiar with the character in general walking into the movie. The movie is very much a B-movie dark comedy which it does ok. When the movie goes into that B-movie camp, I think the movie is fun to watch. I think where the movie suffers is when it tries to go to serious and emotional. It doesn't do those scenes particularly well. The cast is fine but no one is really that memorable. I do love the design of the Toxic Avenger. I think the make up job is done really well. The violence is fine and very gruesome for people coming in for that. It feels like they were trying to do a modern B flick and I think it keeps certain aspects to reserve to make anything memorable. I think something like Boy Kills World or Guns Akimbo is a more consistent crazy tone and what I was expecting from this film. That being said, this movie is fine as a drink movie with friends at home.
The Roses is a remake of the 1989's movie and book, The War of the Roses. I never read the book or watched the movie so I had no expectations walking into this movie. The Roses is about the slow descent of a marriage between a successful architect and a successful cook. This movie is really held together because of the lead couple played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. They have great chemistry and snark so I enjoyed every scene they are in together. The story is also good where you can see how their marriage slowly crumbles and it is slow. It is not like a lot of romantic comedies where it happens fast, there is a lot of small pieces that pile up for the eventual blow out. The actual divorce blow up doesn't happen until the third act so some viewers may be disappointed if they saw the trailers. For me, I like the slow progression. That being said probably the weakest elements are the supporting cast. Andy Samberg & Kate McKinnon are two of the more well known actors that play friends of the Roses and a lot of their jokes miss. All the friends are not funny or just rude and you never understood why they were friends with any of them in the first place. The children also are pretty forgettable. I did enjoy the movie overall but that is only because of how strong the leads are. You can definitely wait to see this at home.
Ne Zha II is the highest grossing animated movie of all time so that is a big accomplishment that I had to see if it lived up to the hype or not. I had not seen the first movie so I was going into it blind a little bit. Ne Zha II follows literally right after the first movie about the Chinese mythological character, Nezha. So yeah, definitely see the first movie as there is a lot going on in this series. I ended up watching the original right after and the first movie is ok. Ne Zha 2 definitely raises the stakes as the characters deal with characters for Heaven and demons for Hell. The first thing I will say about this series is it has such great imagery. Chinese mythology has such fantastical imagery and characters and that is definitely shown here. The animation is also definitely more refined compared to the original. This definitely a movie to watch on the big screen if you can. The story has a lot of elements and characters it juggles throughout but nothing felt super overwhelming when you realized everything that is going on. The voice cast also did good (I saw the dub). Probably its weakest element is the comedy which is actually better than the original. Every time a comedy section happens it is kinda meh although overall they do juggle the serious and comedy moments well. By the time you get to the climax, it was thrilling to watch especially because all of the fights scenes are great. All the fight choreography is great. I am definitely excited for the sequel. I can see why it is the highest grossing animated movie of all time because it just feels so different to watch. Definitely give it a try if you like animated movies although I will warn it is a long movie with a 2 hr and a half hour run time.
