I just finished watching The Substance late at night and found myself laughing at the ending, thinking, "WTF is even happening?" This was my first real experience with body horror, and honestly, I don't think the genre is for me - so take this review with a grain of salt.
That said, I do think the movie is a bit overhyped in some reviews. I get that body horror is a niche genre and might be going through a kind of revival, but for me, it didn't provoke any fear or discomfort. I was mostly just watching it unfold without feeling all that invested. The visuals were definitely interesting - probably the strongest part of the film. The plot is simple yet surreal, which gives it some appeal, but overall, it didn't fully land for me.
