    International Competition

      Winner

      Edmond Was a Donkey

      7.0 (247)
      Franck Dion
A little man who climbs up the stairs rather than take the lift; a small cog in the wheel. The film guides us through a grim and grey world which is dramatically influenced by a joke from the protagonist. People who are close to him calmly recount his story using precise, razor sharp words - with a power equal to the fine use of light and sound. All of this combines to form a fulfilling place of refuge for him, one in which he can ultimately immerse himself completely.

      Maurice Hübner
A film without words... Sensitive, still and eerie, told with atmospheric images and much flair. A brilliant story about acceptance, hospitality and affection. The protagonists reveal their emotions to the audience with loving conviction. A rousing game of hide-and-seek of a unique kind.

Youth Jury Award - Honorable Mention

    National Competition

    • Winner

      Lucky Seven

      6.4 (16)
      Claudia Heindel
A special mention for Claudia Heindel for "Lucky Seven", a film which brings a sad aspect of reality to the screen with excellent actors and a marvellous visual language. The overall situation of the protagonists seems as hopeless as the future of a goldfish appears in a bowl. May we express our great acknowledgement for this piece as a whole, the commitment to the project, the complex research and the courage to tackle the subject. We hope to see many more films from you in the future with this personal style.

      Radislav Jovanov Gonzo
Using sensitivity and fine dialogue, the filmmakers accentuates the loving relationship of two young women. The inability of one of them to speak drives the other one to despair. The powerful actresses accord this short story a depth and intensity as the poetic game with little notes becomes a bridge between fear and understanding. We congratulate the filmmaker.

      Snail Trail

      5.8 (16)
      Philipp Artus
      Madalena Graca
What does an animated snail trail sound like? Philipp Artus and Madalena Graca have a unique answer to this. Digital sounds assemble in a original sense to form a congenial score that is one with the delicate animation. Innovative, free from clichés, visionary. The Universal Music Promotion Award 2013 is awarded unanimously to "Snail Trail".

      Tram

      6.6 (375)
      Petr Marek
What can be more difficult than finding among the trillion pieces of music already out there in the universe the tracks for the film that match it ultimately - and are affordable on top of that. Because Michaela has achieved this so marvellously in her courageous and - at least in the jury's opinion - totally funny animation film "TRAM", the jury would like to give it a special mention. And of course in the same breath too one for the various bands and the composers Doba (MIDI LIDI) Stonozka and Camille Saint-Saëns.

      Wind

      7.3 (309)
      Robert Löbel
Suddenly the air is still. With straight lines and simple means, the film narrates man's ability to adjust - or then again not to. Colours and shapes are used sparingly. The images are clear and unadorned, as indeed are the characters. In their actions they appear funny, yet go far beyond being mere caricatures. This film achieves the art of condensing a drawn animation story into a parable of man.

For a Zen film and its breathtaking use of an unusual technique, poetically capturing the fast passing moments. In this film, stopping at a traffic light is fun.

What Can I Wish You Before the Fight?

A persuasive psychological portrait of the refugee children, combined with an intimate film language and a standing performance by a young actress.

      Wind

      Robert Löbel
What happens when the routine abandons us? "Wind" builds up such an absurd-comic utopia, which in the end is perhaps much closer to our world than was assumed at the beginning. For his wealth of ideas and fine humour, we would like to give a special mention to Robert Löbel's film.

Short Fiction Film - National Competition

      Harry's Truckstop

      Arto Sebastian
An unusual love story in an unfamiliar milieu. Under the direction of this still young director, the actors depict a very precise and richly detailed portrait of their characters without ever actually revealing them, even in those moments when it would be easy for the sake of a joke.

A dream world unfolds. We submerge ourselves in it, amused at first until we slowly realised the unbearable situation from which it has emerged. A flight that only keeps the cycle of violence alive. With incredible respect for her main character, still a child, and a lot of imagination and clever dramatic direction, the young director has created an especially penetrating film. We would really like to see more from her.

This film presents a stunning metaphor of society, combining various techniques and a convincing use of body language. A dark and timeless mirror of universal events. But there is hope at the end of the forest.

Very personal, intimate and at times almost bordering on shame, the young director permits us to become closely involved in the inner lives of her characters. Doing so, the various image and sound levels work like elements of a mosaic. Through which a genuinely rich portrait is created.

      Neritan Zinxhiria
This film impressed the jury by its stillness and archaic nature. The strong visuals get stuck in your head. The convincing presence of the actress and her donkey kept at home, as well as the rough yet beautiful surroundings make this film a little gem. "The land of the living is far away, while the world of the dead smells like camomile."

Telling a subject that is small and simple, yet so important, loud, radical and even sentimental and especially dramatic for all people, and that in such a funny way while constantly "standing over it" in a consistently exemplary fashion - this is simply the best of cinema in our eyes. Both relevant and amusing for the audience, all we can simply say is WOW.
