His musical, "The Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," in a Deaf West Production at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California was awarded the 2005 Los Angeles Stage Alliance Ovation Award for Touring Production.

Roger won the 1985 Tony Award for Original Musical Score for "Big River". The same year, he also won 2 Drama Desk Awards: Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics.

Roger was inducted in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1973, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1995.
