Ken Nolan moved to Los Angeles, California in 1990 to pursue a career as a screenwriter. He broke through in 1994, when he landed a low level agent that pitched his first script around town. That script was an action thriller titled "In Contempt". The story surrounded a pair of New York City cops, getting a divorce in a courthouse, during a terrorist attack. With the building locked down, the two cops must put their differences aside and save the day. It sold to Warner Bros. Pictures for 'mid-six figures' but was never produced.

In 2005, Ken Nolan wrote a scriptment for an adaptation of the Whitley Strieber novel "The Grays". His 75-page half script, half treatment was purchased by Sony Pictures for $3 million. It was an alien sci-fi thriller story has yet to be produced.

In 1998, Ken Nolan would sell his gritty action spec "The Quick Killing" to Imagine/Universal for '$800,000 against low-seven figures'. The story followed a former mafia hit man, who has put his criminal life behind him. But when he is asked to pull off one more job by an old associate, He does so, against his better judgment, and finds that he's been set up.

In 1995, Ken Nolan sold his second spec script. An action thriller titled "The Long Rains" to Imagine Entertainment for '$600,000 against $1 million'. Along with this script, Nolan signed a first-look deal with producer Brian Grazer at Imagine/Universal. The story followed a convict in a small Mississippi town, who escapes prison with two other inmates and attempts to retrieve cache of stolen money and take revenge on the crooked sheriff who framed him for murder.
