She performed stand-up comedy before the cameras appeared and was actually slated to be the first Host of It's Showtime at the Apollo (1987) before Sinbad, Kim Coles and Steve Harvey at the same time she was cast in the original line-up of A Different World (1987). The was the first Afri-centric character on national TV since Cicely Tyson wore a short afro.
