In 1971, before she was well-known as an actress, Cusack became notorious for her involvement with footballer George Best. One weekend when he failed to turn up for his club Manchester United's trip to play Chelsea in London, Cusack's North London flat became besieged by the press when they discovered that he was, in fact, with her.

In his book "Kate Remembered" A. Scott Berg notes that Katharine Hepburn thought Cusack was "the real McCoy - one of the most exciting actors I've ever seen".
