Richard was asked to return for "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains"; However, in order to play, he had to apply to leave the U.S. Due to still being under house arrest his request was denied by a federal judge in Rhode Island.

On September 8, 2005, a federal grand jury in Providence, Rhode Island, indicted Richard Hatch on two counts of tax evasion. Hatch was offered a lenient sentence in exchange for a guilty plea, which he declined due to his belief in his innocence. Richard went on to state that he was basing his legal defense on an alleged agreement that NBC and Survivor producers would pay the taxes on the winnings prior to giving him the money if Hatch won if he swore to not disclose production staff feeding another contestant secretly, interfering with the authenticity and legitimacy of the reality game. The Judge presiding over the case refused to allow discussion of this and on January 25, 2006, found Mr. Hatch guilty of tax evasion for not paying the taxes owed.

Richard brought a journal as his luxury item as a contestant on Survivor.

Richard is one course shy of earning his Ph.D. in Humanities from Salve Regina University in Newport, RI.

Richard has an adopted son named Christopher.

Richard is the first-ever $1 million dollar winner on Survivor.

Says he plans to use his Survivor money to start an outdoor program for troubled teens.

Richard has authored a book that was released in 2000 titled: "101 Survival Secrets: How to Make $1,000,000, Lose 100 Pounds, and Just Plain Live Happily." The book was originally titled: "Survival Skills for Life: An Owner's Manual.".

Richard was a guest contributor on the WQSX-FM morning radio team stationed in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. (2001).

Richard was the first person on the Australian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (1999) (Celebrity Special) to walk away without a cent.

Richard spent five years in the United States Army, during which time he attended the United States Military Academy Preparatory School in Fort Monmouth, NJ, and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Richard earned a B.A. in Applied Behavioral Sciences and Management from National-Louis University while living and attending classes in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.

Richard attended and completed general coursework at George Mason University.
