Great film
Heartfelt
But anyone who watched the trailers knows that. You know what you are going into. It is very formulaic, but the acting is good. Even the little parts are good. I would say if you watched and liked "The Fault in Our Stars" this is a good movie for you. It focuses on interpersonal relationships and the raw emotions that come with tragedy. If you are looking to cry, but definitely feel something, this is the movie for you.
I feel like a lot of the negative hype may come from expecting more from the movie than was ever promised. Two of the main actors are known as taking action movie roles. This movie was never marketed as an action movie, though. It was advertised as a drama about a man who had lost his child. That is exactly what it is. Sure there are some unexpected turns, but at the end of the day, don't expect what was never advertised to be there.
It doesn't get much love, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I've not found a great deal of love for this film, and that surprises me, I very much enjoyed it. It had me moved to tears. The ending in particular hit hard.
A great story, with some terrific performances, a terrific cast, including Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet. Despite the names, I must give full credit to Will Smith, the best performance I've seen from him to date, he had me choked up.
I'm glad I didn't listen to negative reviews....
One of the most underrated movies of all time
Le saviez-vous
- AnecdotesWill Smith's father, Willard Carroll Smith, Sr., was dying while Smith researched this role. He has said that working on this movie was extremely therapeutic in helping him deal with the ultimate loss of his dad.
- GaffesThere are two explanations for why Love, Time, and Death were not seen in the videos. One is that they were removed with editing software. That would be true if they were only actors. Otherwise, they could actually be Love, Time, and Death pretending to be actors, because they were also helping Howard's friends with their issues. The PI was hired to follow Howard, so would film any action on his part. She may not have seen Time, Love, or Death because they can appear to whomever they wish and remain invisible to everyone else. They only interact with the main characters.

Howard: [to Brigitte, personification of Death] I've heard all of your platitudes. I got them, I know. "She's in a better place." And, "This is all a part of a master plan." Heard that one, too. Here's my favorite. "God looked down and saw the most beautiful rose, so beautiful that he picked it to have it in Heaven all for Himself." Then there's the science, biocentrism, and we're all living and dying in infinite universes all at the same time. And then the religion, the Christians and their salvation, and the Buddhists and their Samsara, and the Hindus and their 41st sacrament. And can't forget the poetry. Oh, the poetry. "To die is different from what anyone supposed and luckier." Whitman. And, "Rage... Rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right." Thomas. And then...
Howard: [singing] Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream Merrily, merrily merrily, merrily, life is but a dream! I got it. I got it! It all basically says that you're a natural part of life, we shouldn't hate you, we shouldn't fear you. I guess we should just accept you, right? That's it? I get it. Here's the thing. It's all a bunch of intellectual bullshit because she's not here holding my fucking hand.
- Générique farfeluThe opening logos of Warner Brothers Pictures, New Line Cinema, Village Roadshow Pictures, Ratpac Entertainment, and Overbrook Entertainment are all in pure white, including the backgrounds, which then goes to a line of pure white domino type blocks ending with a clock shaped circle (also with pure white blocks on a white background) as the movies dialogue starts.
