Reviewers say 'Star Trek: Discovery' receives mixed reactions for its fresh take, impressive effects, and diverse cast. Fans appreciate modern themes and character development. Criticisms include Klingon redesigns, deviations from traditional values, and reliance on action over philosophical depth. Some find character arcs and storytelling lacking, while others praise progressive social justice themes. The series polarizes audiences with its approach to core Star Trek elements and new directions.

Star Trek: Self Discovery
First 2 seasons I thoroughly enjoyed. (Through all seasons the constant, intense, whispered dialogue drives me nuts.)
Now everyone on the ship needing to be acknowledged for their feelings and overly emotional sense of being completely overshadows any mission.
This should be called Star Trek: Self Discovery because it's more like an aggressive HR sensitivity training seminar than anything Star Trek.
If Star Trek is what you're looking for, this isn't it. If you want a sci-fi, poorly written soap opera, this is your jam.
There's about 15-20 minutes of each episode worth watching if you're interested their actual mission. Skip skip skip

Get on with it....and stop crying!
I really like ST and grew up with Kirk in the days if you missed an episode, you missed an episode!, Even in Picard days , I'm that old. I loved the original and Next Gen. The stories, the acting , sets and characters. I even liked the early episodes of Discovery and didn't know S5 was coming. So S5? It's just a hard slog watching the captain sob, cry, hug, cry again and not do any adventuring , well not much anyway. The series is just a long chat with each other on how they love each other and will miss each other and then a bit of story. I suppose the days when a whole story per episode is long gone replaced with a 2 hour story elongated to a series of 8 hour chats, hugs and crying and the occasional bit of story.
Needy
The show started out techno-clever with interesting character interactions.
Now all we have is a bunch of needy characters episode after episode. Even the computer is needy. It is exhausting.
I give it a 6 because I still have hope, but the writing is being sucked into a black hole of neediness.

Worst Star Trek series ever - sappy and draining.
The first season was ok and had a promising start but it rapidly decayed into a sappy soap opera set in the Star Trek universe. The characters in the show and the plot have all the potential needed but the continuing agony of ongoing psychology sessions (they call them episodes) is making me reconsider my future and I'll need counselling, long into the future, for having watched this. Writing this is part of my exposure therapy after season 4 where my brain was set to stun. But seriously, so disappointed that the focus was on giving out life lessons and not writing good Star Trek stories. I get it that you can have positive messages in shows, not a bad thing, but this is just way too much, at the expense of a potentially good series.
In my personal unscientific rating scale 4=Forced myself to watch to the end but didn't really enjoy and won't watch it again.

Season 3-5 is a joke
Just terrible writing and acting has devolved to utter trashy talk in season 5. I am so glad this series is over. This is not Startrek....
On plus side there are some good things such as the special effects, Saru, the engineers and the doctor. Captain Georgio was awesome as well but they killed her off so Michael could assume some sort of predestination to the Captains chair.
The tech issues are bad in this show, could the transporter not detected the temporal bug? It picks up everything else unless it is to further some insane plot line that is so far fetched that it becomes unbelievable. I have and will put my trust into Picard, lower decks, and strange new worlds. I AM HOPING THE WRITERS ON THIS SHOW STAY AWAY FROM STRANGE NEW WORLDS AND ARE NEVER INVOLVED WITH ANOTHER TREK SERIES. GOOD RIDANCE!

- AnecdotesThe Starfleet vessels seen in the first season, including the Discovery, the Shenzou and the redesigned Enterprise, were all designed by production artist John Eaves. Eaves' work with Star Trek spans three decades. Probably his most notable contribution was the design of the Enterprise-E for Star trek: Premier contact (1996).
- GaffesWith Michael being the adoptive sister of Spock, the series has many flashbacks to their childhood and upbringing on Vulcan. Spock's Vulcan half-brother, Sybok, does not appear nor is mention during these scenes. In Star Trek 5: L'ultime frontière (1989), Spock says that he and Sybok grew up together. However, since it's never stated when Sybok joined Sarek's home - only that he did so following his mother's death - or when he was exiled from the family, it's not impossible Sybok moved in after Burnham, and left before she graduated (the two extremes of the flashbacks). Also, since Sybok was never mentioned before Star Trek V, it seems reasonable the family never spoke of him again after his estrangement.
- Autres versionsThe serif-font legends and subtitles in the "broadcast" episodes are absent from the DVD versions, where they are replaced with the standard DVD subtitles.
