Before and After/Rumble in the Bronx/Mary Reilly/Unforgettable/Mr. Wrong

Roger Ebert - Host: Well, let me say right off that "Unforgettable" has maybe the most absurd plot I've seen in a long time. This movie makes "Congo" look like a documentary. At first, it tries to handle the material in a sort of serious way, but by the end, Liotta has pumped in the memories of three or four different people, and his life is like homicidal channel surfing. Fiorentino, who can be such a strong actress, is reduced here to basically tagging along for the ride, and by the end of the movie, there are so many suspects and so many explanations that we desperately need injections of sanity and intelligence and common sense. This movie dives RIGHT off the deep end. Wow.

Gene Siskel - Host: I did not need the injection.

[Roger chuckles]

Gene Siskel - Host: I enjoyed it. I thought...

Roger Ebert - Host: You did?

Gene Siskel - Host: Yes.

[Roger chuckles]

Gene Siskel - Host: This is the kind of goofy thing, I, it is absurd, of course.

Roger Ebert - Host: Thank you.

Gene Siskel - Host: But, I'll tell you what. Ray Liotta, I think, is a very underrated actor. I mean, he was superb in "Goodfellas", and that's really the first time he had a chance to show the full range of his- he is so...

[pause]

Gene Siskel - Host: ex- exciting...

Roger Ebert - Host: [interrupting] What is he? What is he?

[chuckles]

Gene Siskel - Host: I'll tell you what he is: It's the classic case of the guy who's wronged, it's the same thing that propelled "The Fugitive", it's the guy who's wronged, and he wants to prove, he's gonna do it through all this science.

Roger Ebert - Host: Okay, so it didn't bother you that the brain fluid is all sitting there in the police evidence room, and he sneaks...

Gene Siskel - Host: That's a given.

Roger Ebert - Host: ...And he sneaks it and he gets more brain fluid out of the guy...

Gene Siskel - Host: Roger, I had never seen, I had never seen anything like it.

Roger Ebert - Host: No, neither had I.

[laughs]

Gene Siskel - Host: Okay, I'd never seen anything like it, and so, I have this very good actor, totally into his part, uh, and Fiorentino at first is kind of bookish, and I thought that was, after "The Last Seduction", it's kind of a switch to see her. So I've got two good actors cooking in a goofball plot. I liked it.

Roger Ebert - Host: Well, I'm glad you enjoyed yourself.
