Howard Jones: Things Can Only Get Better

The main thing about both song and video of "Things Can Only Get Better" relate to proving yourself in face of adversities and obstacles in order to get what you want or simply see that things and life can get better. While the music is quite explicit about such notion the video goes into a more mysterious mode, so it'll take some effort for viewers to interpret that idea - and that's why this video works to a great effect.

It opens with a series of confusing misunderstandings and problems faced by two performers (a Chaplin/Carlitos impersonator and a karate fighter) on dressing rooms and backstage as Howard Jones and his musicians are preparing to go on stage. Later comes the concert, an enthusiastic crowd enjoying everything and we wonder why we were introduced to those other artists. Somehow in the middle of Jones' performance they appear to show their skills, make their act and all those cold feet problems seem to fade away, and while it feels such an odd and random choice to be included with the singer and his band, the crowd loved it, and that's where the song's ideas about facing the fear and believing that things will be alright are merged into the mix. A thoughtful and excellent idea.

A favorite track of mine over the years but strangely enough that his wasn't the very first version I heard. I got to know it after a blogger send it to me on Twitter (I think his name was Aaron, forgot the surname) and I loved it. His was a quieter, almost dramatic version with little instruments usage so when I heard this original by Howard Jones I was shocked but very impressed (extended version is even greater, the bass rhythm and the prolongued horn section bits are a pure bliss).

It's the kind of the song to think about, to reflect about his positive message (the clip is full of high energy and optimism), and you can dance to it. 9/10.
