De-aging is an expensive vfx technique - as much as $100k per shot. De-aging the two kids - who are heavily featured in the film - could have easily taken up over half the film's modest $60M budget.

Actors of any age are cast within a range of ages that they can pass for and both of these kids can pass for the ages they were in the first film. De-aging is unnecessary when the goal is to make a 16 year old look like a 14 year old. It's only done when you need to target a MUCH younger version of an actor and lighting and makeup won't do it.

Currently Paramount has not announced that a third movie is in development, but director John Krasinski has stated that he does have ideas for one.

Paramount Pictures has hired Jeff Nichols to write and direct a spin-off based on an original idea from John Krasinski, who will produce. The film is scheduled to be released on March 31, 2023.
