OK, first off. There were too many unnecessary F-Bombs, so much so that it sounded like the actors even felt uncomfortable dropping them in as was written. Secondly, there was all kinds of build up to the climactic end and it was over. Geez, my 12 year old could have written a better ending than that.
The acting was not as horrible as others have reviewed - I have turned off other movies due to bad acting, but kept going with this one for the hopes of a good ending. Well, what I got was an empty feeling when it was all over.

The cringeworthy, stereotypical teens REALLY need to be rewritten. It's as if the writers don't know how to combine apathetic, privileged, tuned out teenagers convincingly.
The storyline has promise and if you can hang in past the 3rd episode, the series starts to pick up. A little more background on the "monsters" would be helpful. As well as showing a few more creatures would help.

Anyone who goes on about this being some high school melodrama show hasn't watched it. Yeah, the kids are in high school and that's a part of the story, but a small one.
It IS kind of standard secret organization fighting monsters in the world stuff, but the overall story is strong, the script is at least good, and the acting is fine....if the casting a bit qestionable.
I don't expect every show to have Avengers level special effects, and this is no exception, but the visuals are more than passable. But overall the show lacked a....personality. It was a little by the numbers, not really inspired and just didn't have a feel of it's own.
But it's not the write it off, predictable, boring wreck that some people are trashing it as. It was solid, and if you like supernatural action with a good story, you'll dig it.

The show tries a little too hard to be something for everyone instead of focusing on its strength which is the challenges of being a monster hunting family... I will say that at the end of the season I was still interested in what the further future actions of the characters would be and that is about as much as you could hope for within Netflix TV show

Updated: I finally made myself watch past episode 2, and while I maintain the disappointment of seeing a potential great show tarnished by bad cast choices and poor adaptation from the Gtaphic Novel, in the end I was somewhat entertained.
I hope they do better in season 2 if they ever get one. And since I think opinions are not immutable gave 2 more stars, from 5 to 7.
Love the premise of the show and the colors. The acting is suferable at best, this show with a different cast would be a hit.

Only half way through & I keep asking myself why am I still watching... I like the overall premise of a monster fighting family, but the annoying moody twins are so cringe worthy. In fact all the teens are stereotypical & annoying AF ! Get rid of the teens or at least make them likeable & give us more monsters !!!

Of all of the actors they could have picked, WHY did the casting director choose J.C. MacKenzie to play Fred? I know it sounds cruel, but I preferred watching his scenes with my eyes closed.

Seems some people focus on the fact the characters are in an interracial marriage, where one child is gay, and call it overdone political correctness and then just diss the whole show.
Listen, you aren't going to get Sir Lawrence Olivier acting here. But it does the job.
Story lines so far have had me not wanting to pause the episode. Those complaining just want everything explained in the first 3 episodes. In otherwords they want fast food tv.
First season I give a 7 out of 10. I rate by actually thinking and analyzing, not using what is obvious in most is personal predjudices.

Honestly the 5.4 rating is not a fair score and I hope everyone gives it a go as I feel it has potential. I'm really enjoying this show and the 3 episodes I've seen. The story had enough unexpected twists and turns in the first episode to keep me intrigued. I don't agree the acting is bad at all! It's more like a few of the actors are still finding their feet in their new roles, so the nuances aren't quite there yet.I do wonder at the choice for Fred though. I remember him in Dark Angel and like him as an actor, but he looks older than the actress that plays his Mother, nor does he look in the same age group as his wife. Hard to imagine him as the monster fighting type either. That aside, I like it a lot so far.

I really hated the first episode of this series and wrote the following review to reflect my initial impressions:
"Dialogue in this underwhelming series is trite and clumsy. As it falls from its less-than-capable actor's lips I couldn't help rolling my eyes. The acting especially lacks credibility and naturalism so that it really feels like amateur drama. 3 Stars"
I've come back to edit my initial review having now watched the rest of the series. Unbelievably, after that awful pilot episode with some of the most trite writing I've heard from a while I decided to watch episode two and started to get intrigued.
By the time it finished I found it pretty satisfying, which is a long way from assessment. It's not amazing, but neither is it the train wreck I thought it was going to be. Things get interesting when it takes on an element of GRIM, but I already feel like I'm saying too much. If you liked GRIM you'll probably like this.
Great for a rainy day.

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled for a variety of reasons. First, the premise is excellent but so much potential was wasted. This show could have offered the viewer a semi-original experience but instead chose to roll stereotypical and predictable into a boring agony. Casting was the first mistake. Fred Allen and Viv Allen were played by actors too unbelievable for their roles. The actor portraying Fred Allen presented as weak and goofy with zero identifiable characteristics of a "monster hunter", while the actress playing Viv Allen so overplayed an unhappy teenager, you want her whiny, ridiculous self to be taken out by the nearest Presidio team. Second, for two teenagers who discover the secrets that they do, both Viv and Geoff's reactions are utterly difficult to stomach. As a frequent and dedicated follower of many fantastical shows, suspension of reality is expected and often desired, however these two teenagers react to all of the going-ons as if they were watching paint dry. They portray teenagers as selfish, whiny, foolish, ungrateful, and in general incredibly stupid. By the fifth episode, it was near impossible to find anything likable about either of them. Lastly, the writing. Occasionally, there was some humorous banter, but the overwhelming majority of the dialogue was contrived and lacked the ability to further the story or character development. Tedious. Disappointing. I'm more disappointed in myself for continually looking forward to these new releases by Netflix to only be let down by their simplistic attempts that undervalue my viewer loyalty.

This show had so much potential, but the writers and creaters made so many bad choices. Most of the casting is good, and the storyline is good, it is just incredibly rushed. All the events they have mashed together into this single season could easily have made 2 or 3 really good seasons. It's very hard to get really invested in the characters and their stories when some of them only get half an episode to show who they are.
I enjoyed the show and I hope they make a reboot but with the proper writing and storyline.

Let introduce myself as a college educated septuagenarian, raised in a conservative family that attended Catholic universities for my BA, MBA and ME, I'm still getting acustomed to same gender couples, hate heavy metal and rap and I'm against the liberal arms commerce the USA has, which has caused rampant violence in my country. Also, albeit a fan of solid SciFi since my teens; I'm not even remotely a fan of horror films.
Thus. having set the reference frame for my comment I'll say that I liked the series. Sure it's oriented to teens; guess my grandkids will love it, but even so I could find enough adult, family points of view to relate to the adult characters.
The first chapters probably fail to hook you straight on but once you get to 3d base you won't drop it. It certainly is worth a try if you can free yourself from preconceived criteria,
The last half is fast paced and has a lot of gripping issues. Good charachters turn not to be so good and bad ones will make you warm up to them. Lots of surprise elements and twists. Lots of open --and interesting- venues to be explored and hopefilly resolved in the coming chapters too.
Closing chapter is good; plausible within the premises of the series and leaves you ready for the next season. Plenty of material for some good penmanship.

Wow, I just looked up how old J.C .Mackenzie is and he is only 3 years older than me, he looks so old, is his Mother sucking the life from him, she definitely could be a monster.!!
Nearly the whole Family have little to no redeeming features and they get worse through the series. On the whole I am enjoying the show but I agree with many comments in other reviews about this show, too P.C. so many stereotypes, no real likeable characters and J.C. Mackenzie looking more like the Grandfather than the Father and not enough Monsters, I am sure next we will find that the real Monsters are the Humans. Please Netflix, don't turn into SyFi Channel for quality.

When I tuned in to the first episode, I had high expectations for this show. In about 20 min that faded. The acting is subpar and the main character (the father) looks way to old compared even his mother. I soldiered on and made through 3 episodes before deciding that this hot mess was not going to get any better. This is not one of Netflix's finer moments.

I was not sure about this at first but I really enjoyed it, I don't think the acting is bad at all and don't understand the one out of ten marks. This is pure escapism, just relax and enjoy it.

Diverse casting is an integral part of marketing in today's world. However, there is a point where overreach become highly annoying. This is especially true when the accompanying woke virtue signaling becomes an intense lecture aimed at the audience. Couple this with bad casting, bad acting, and bad direction and you have this very boring abomination.
Time to bring back entertainment.

I want to punch the son in the face and it's a preposterous story. I don't think I've met a more obnoxious boy in a tv. Monsters Magic and sexual orientation don't exactly gel very well.
All the high school melodrama was just too much, lose the kids and the show would be much better.

People are so ADD now it's ridiculous. They watch one or two episodes then give it a one without learning anything about the show at all. Do they seriously expect everything to come to light in the first 2 episodes? One person complained about racism at the gas station in the first episode. It's about WAY more than that, and actually has NOTHING to do with racism. If you actually kept watching they'd learn that but people don't have the patience anymore to watch more than one or two episodes of a show because they have to know everything right this second. These after people who've probably never read a book in their life because they need to know the whole story in 10 minutes. Maybe watch more than one or two episodes, then judge. If you haven't, you have no business rating ANY show

For me, by the time it got to episode 7 the show was unwatchable. The nonsensical plot and character additions along with acting that went from plastic to worse convinced me there was no need to go further and no possibility of a second season. Save yourself some time and don't even start on this fool's errand of a show.

When they understood the power they posses, they are immediately snitching around. That is true of themselves. I hope young guys will never get any thoughts from them at all.
In my opinion, Omari was the right and well balanced man. All other adults are distorted and twisted mindset-people.
