tom and jerry at their most pure

Tom is chasing Jerry when the mouse befriends a small canary. A lot of the gags work and hearing Tom's laugh is infectious. And the canary is one of the third characters that I like, unlike the buzzard for Flirty Birdy or the fish from Cat Fishin'. All in all this is a pretty funny violent Tom and Jerry short. This hilarious cartoon can be found on disc one of the Spotlight collection DVD of "Tom & Jerry"

    My Grade: A

DVD Extras: Commentary by historian Jerry Beck on how this is his favorite Tom and Jerry cartoon, talks about Jerry's sidekicks, and the animators (kinda sparse, with some silent parts)

One of my favorite Tom and Jerry shorts

This is was the first Tom and Jerry decent episode after Dr, Jekyll and Mr. Mouse in my opinion! This episode is really good and funny in my opinion, this episode has a good animation and sountrack. This episode is a way better than the 1947 crappy episodes, they were too bad and bald in my opinion!

I would rate this as 10/10

    Not Funny

I wouldn't want to let my daughter see it because it's not for kids to sit down and see, as in with gun that they put in there and also with the look that was on Tom's face when he was on the train.

I wouldn't want to see it again because it's not funny.

I did see this one when it was on TV long before I started high school and I don't believe that I laughed when I saw it back then. The ones(that wrote this one)probably got ideas from other cartoons.

What you have here is too violent and STILL too violent, so, that's why I only gave it a 1star review. I'm sorry if I did it but I had to do it.

And it also wasn't fun for me to see.

    Cat Vs. Mouse and Canary

Tom tries to catch both Jerry and a canary. Jerry and the bird trick Tom by dressing as an Indian and making him think he got shot. Tom catches Jerry and ties him to toy train tracks, but the canary sends the feline down to the ground with a bowling ball.

A Great Example Of Why These Tom & Jerry Cartoons Were So Well-Received

Tom is wrecking the house, smashing everything in sight with a broom while trying to hit Jerry. The little canary in the bird cage sees Jerry in big trouble, gets out his cage and comes to the mouse's rescue. Jerry then chases the bird, and he when he's got him and ready to move in for the kill, Jerry returns the favor and rescues the little yellow-feathered guy.

Those two then escape for a breather in Jerry's mouse hole. They shake hands and become a team, doing battle with the cat.

The whole cartoon has a lot of funny and clever scenes. This is one of the better Tom and Jerry efforts and makes me realize once again how talented there writers were on these animated short subjects. This is "Exhibit A" why these cartoons were so popular.

As with most cartoons of this era, the attention to background detail is amazing. Even the wooden interior of the mousehole is drawn accurately. Of course, cartoons were shown as part of a cinema feature, in the years before TV. So while kids liked the sight gags, adults appreciated the wonderfully furnished homes ,(with all the latest gadgets) that were shown.
    • Gaffes
When the canary picks up the pistol in one scene, the pistol's handle turns from brown to silver and turns back to brown in the next scene.
