The name Paladin refers to the Knight chess piece on his business card, a throwback to the 12 fictional Knights of Charlemagne's Court. Paladin became his alias. In his former life (before becoming a mercenary) he graduated from West Point, was a cavalry Captain in the Civil War and a champion fencing master.

In order from the first season on his main mounts were: Curley, Frisco, Rudy, Mexico and Rafter. Richard Boone (Paladin) gave Rafter his name.
Update: Hal Needham, Richard Boone's stunt double, indicates that by the time he came into the picture Paladin's horse was called Rafter. He performed the tree-climbing stunt in THE HAUNTED TREES and from that point on was Boone's double in most of his films.
