The Adventures of Pinocchio

This Pinocchio, from 1984, is possibly the worst remake in movie history. Whereas the original, 1940, Disney Pinocchio, based on the Collodi fantasy about the misadventures of a wooden puppet who gets the chance to become a real boy was one of the greatest movies ever made, with Oscar-winning music and songs by Harline and Washington, vivid characters, striking animation and variously charming and scary voice performers, this version has a limp screenplay, forgettable characters, lousy voice acting and animation that wouldn't pass muster for the cheesiest, PBS TV cartoon show. That IMDB doesn't list the names of any of the voice performers, may be a blessing for their careers. Get the original Pinocchio, and avoid this one like a bad street.

Now to the problem: Disney has inexplicably discontinued the original Pinocchio. Thus, the only way to view it is via expensive used copies on sale through Amazon ($36-45), or through renting it from a video outlet. I hope that the geniuses at Disney aren't preparing to loose a politically correct replacement on the world. Hopefully, they have a deluxe DVD in the works. Prayers may be in order.

although the animation is not anywhere near as good as the Disney version, I grew up watching this film and love it just as much now as I did when I was a child. The story shows more in depth the journey he takes to become a real boy than the Disney version, and in 2009, having recently purchased the afore mentioned deluxe DVD that was predicted in the previous comment, I still found myself wanting to reminisce by watching this version also. its a good lesson for children growing up and offers more story lines to follow. As previously mentioned though, the Disney version is also a must see if you haven't already, but this version offers a more classic look at the tale instead of the more modern twist we see in the Disney version. it reminds me far more of reading/watching fairy tales and the old Grimm Bros classic than the Disney version. I think the previous comment sold this film way short and anyone who likes the tale of Pinocchio should watch this film with an open mind. great film and still a fan at 22.

Not having see Pinocchio in a while we though tonight would be a good time to see it with our 4 year old daughter...

The Anaimation was bad, the voice over was bad, but the content was even worse. My daughter kept asking why are they being so mean to him, why are they not nice....

This was bad all around... Bring back the Disney version! This was bad enough that we are taking our copy out of circulation. It is already in the trash!

Even if your not a Disney fan, do not buy this version - look elsewhere and save yourself the 90 minutes of your life that we'll never get back!
