So beautifully filmed, depicting a horrendous time for Indigenous Australians in Australian History. But this film also brings the importance of the feminine principle in both Indigenous Culture and the new generation of European Settlers (Invaders). Being filmed in the 1980's it has captured a certain moment in time. A hauntingly beautiful film.
Kudos to the only other reviewer, I concur.

Some will find Manganinnie a bit slow and boring, it's not everybody's ideal form of entertainment.
A must view for Aussie's with an interest in the past.
Albeit nearly 40 years old, this is a good watch. With its reasonably accurate portrayal of how Australian indigenous peoples lived and the poor treatment they got from the colonials. As well as a look at life in general in the colonial days.

This is one of those movies that may get into your head. If it does, it will be there for a very long time.
Most of the story is not in the movie: you need to fill it in from your imagination.
An example: Mangannini is the fire-carrier for her people. When Joanna drops the fire-stick into the water, the look of utter devastation on Mangannini's face will stay with you. Because while Mangannini is the fire carrier for her people, she has no way to make a fire. Tasmania in winter is a cold place...
Mangannini's people no longer exist. Neither do any of Mangannini's descendants.
We did that.

To us whites they were vermin to be exterminated. The same as the thylacine. And they shared the same fate. Knowing the fate of the Tasmanian Aboriginals this movie made me cry.
