The reason is never made explicit within the movie itself, aside from his assertions that the humans are dangerous. However, related media, such as the direct-to-video prequel and the stage adaptation, link Triton's misanthropy and xenophobia to the death of his wife. Triton blames the humans for her death, and consequently forbids any contact between the merworld and the surface world.
16-year-old mermaid Ariel (voice of Jodi Benson), daughter of Sea King Triton (voice of Kenneth Mars), dreams of living on land. "The Little Mermaid" is actually an 1836 fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The fairy tale was adapted for the film by Disney animation team Ron Clements and John Musker.
