Co-director, Kevin Lima says that Terk is two years older than Tarzan in gorilla years.

Tantor is an African forest elephant. African forest elephants are best recognized for their reddish skin color and larger size, compared to the African bush elephants typically seen in movies set in Africa.

Tarzan and Terk are cousins. This is evident by the fact that Kala is referred to as either "Auntie Kala" or "Auntie K" by Terk.

Terk (voiced by Rosie O'Donnell) is a masculine female, an archetype rarely seen in film in general. Another example of this is Private Vasquez in James Cameron's "Aliens".

In the play and the original novel the character was male. In the original broadway cast of the play, Terk is played by Chester Gregory II.

The DisneyWiki, however, has Terk listed as a girl.

Actually the voice of Baby Terk is also provided by Rosie O'Donnell. Making her one of the few, if not only, people to voice both the younger and older version of the same character in a Disney film. Kristen Bell would follow suit and play the child, teenager and adult version of Anna in La Reine des neiges (2013), also co-directed by Chris Buck.

In the book, Sabor is a lioness. It'd be reasonable to assume that the character would still be female in the movie.
