    gone but not forgotten

It's been 8 years since this amazing program has graced the airwaves, and it still ranks as the best show on television...ever. This is to issues of spirit and personal conscience what "The West Wing" is to political consideration -- an amazing combination of intellect and passion. If ever this program were to become available on DVD, I'd buy 50 and pass them around.

I'll never understand what the conservative Christian groups were so afraid of -- this was easily the most spiritual program on television. It was honest, and unafraid to go to the dark places where religion is most needed. I know members of the church who struggle with the very issues these characters deal with, and such burdens only make them closer to their God. I can only pray that we shall see the likes of "Nothing Sacred" again someday.

the high rating and comments here are for the other "Nothing Sacred"

The comment about a Father Ray and the high votes for this "Nothing Sacred" come from confusion about another "Nothing Sacred." Search the IMDb, and you'll find a "Nothing Sacred" that's noted as "1997/I" and "TV-Series 1997-1998." It starred Kevin Anderson as Father Ray. It was a wonderful show, and it's dearly missed. ABC ran it for a year. Conservative Catholics protested it bitterly, but it was loved by many Catholics and people of other beliefs. It was an amazing show, not about religion, but about the desire to do good in a religious context.

The "Nothing Sacred" at this location may also be a fine show; I know nothing about it. I suspect most of the voters were passionate fans of the other "Nothing Sacred." Why that "Nothing Sacred" is not on DVD, I'll never understand.

    Well acted, written, directed

It was really a shame when they cut this series off in mid-season. It was probably the most honest depiction of a city parish that has ever been produced. Nothing was glossed over and the characters were not shown to be holier than thou. Certainly obvious, was the fact that a priest was one of the main consultants/writers. Issues that beset those who have chosen to be clerics - those who practice - those who do not practice the faith - were thoughtfully presented. The episodes really made one stop and think. I found the shows in which the priest(s) dealt with issues of their own to be most effective. This made them more real and accessible - something, which I am afraid - is not the case with most Catholic clerics. I would suggest that the series be shown in the seminaries so the young men who have elected to follow this path could see what "out there" might be like. I certainly wish that they would release the aired shows on DVD and if there were any in the can, or unreleased, I would relish having them in my library.....and I almost never purchase DVD's.

    Where has the support gone?

I actually work for a Church, and have for many years. This was a show I didn't get to see until the last episodes, when my pastor of all people recommended it to me! I would love to see the rest of the shows!!! I actually have a role in my parish very similar to the nun in this show; I have a leadership role in the Church, and feel like this show was almost predicting where we are headed as a Church! I don't understand where the "controversy' regarding this show was; I think in some ways it showed a very realistic view of what it is like to work for the Church; trying to be "holy" and trying to be human. I pray it makes it to DVD someday!!

An excellent drama of family and faith

This outstanding series, boasting acting and writing of the finest caliber, did not deserve its early demise. It is a realistic, gripping, humorous, heartwarming and heartbreaking portrayal of urban ministry to which people of any or no faith should be able to relate. Ultimately, while the main characters -- Fr. Ray, Fr. Leo, Sister Mo -- are clergy or other religious professionals, they are, more importantly, human beings, struggling to make sense of their lives in the context of an ultimate meaning. A first-rate series, full of stellar performances and memorable episodes, eminently deserving of a reintroduction to the public by way of DVD.
