Hard to watch but very, very important.

Danielle Lurie and Katie Mustard's short film, "In the Morning" is available on the "Sixth Media That Matters Film Festival" DVD. Apparently, it's also available uncut at the website for Women Make Movies--though I saw the edited version and am rather glad I did, as I didn't need to see any of the rape occur nor the bloody aftermath--and the film was strong without that.

This film is about a sad international problem--so-called 'honor killings'. They have taken place mostly in Moslem countries but there have been some cases in Western nations as well. In honor killings, women are murdered 'for the good of the family's reputation'! In some cases, women are murdered for how they dress but in other cases, such as in this film, woman who are rape victims are murdered by their own families because of the embarrassment of having a pregnant unmarried daughter!! Sadly, the film is based on one particular killing, as Kadriye Demirel was murdered by her young brother because she was impregnated by her rapist! The film itself is very short--only about 4 minutes long. In addition to the rape and murder, it shows the horrible pressure put on Kadriye's brother--who was just a boy.

Films like these are very important and I hope more people learn about these ridiculous honor killings. However, seeing some lengthier films would be nice, as I am just not sure how many folks would ever watch a 4 minute film.

Solid Short Film

I saw In the Morning this fall (2004) and immediately came away from it feeling like this was a fresh new short from a fresh new voice. You'd never know the film wasn't shot in Turkey and that it was made by an American. If you get the chance to catch it at a festival or online, take the time. I won't delve into the content cause it's a short and it'll be easy enough for you to figure it out when you see it. It's Short(duh!), moody as hell (i.e. beautifully shot) and well directed. The hand-held camera, dark lighting and gritty look lends itself incredibly well to the content. Don't be surprised if this short nabs some awards as it has a lot going for it. If you like a good short film, In the Morning will stay with you.
