The Doctor and the Witch

The Serenity brings the cattle to a plane and, when Mal is negotiating the selling with the traders, there is a shootout and Shepherd Book is hit. Meanwhile Dr. Simon and River are kidnapped by the residents to work in an isolated area. But Mal needs to leave the planet to seek help for Book and the leave the siblings behind. When the locals discover that River can read minds, they believe she is a witch and wants to burn her at stake.

"Safe" is another entertaining episode of "Firefly". It is good to see the concern of Mal with his crew. One funny moment is when Jayne puts Simon's belongs back in his cabin. My vote is seven.

Anecdotes
Nathan Fillion appeared with Alan Tudyk as a guest on Kevin Smith's Fat Man on Batman with Kevin Smith & Marc Bernardin! (2012). When asked about his favorite memory from Firefly, Nathan related that at the end of this episode referencing cattle rustling, the crew of Serenity sits down to dinner. If you look closely, you will see that they are having one of the few fancy meals they ever enjoyed during the series. They are eating a steak dinner compliments of one of their former cargo passengers. The Serenity dinner scene was the last shot before lunch that day. After finishing the take, the crew broke for lunch and the cast actually ate lunch on the steak dinners provided for the shot. Nathan said it felt like being at home having dinner with all of his best friends.

Gaffes
The empty cargo bay with neat little piles of cow manure, despite a herd milling around in there for days, is highly suspect. Also, one of the cows kicks a cow patty as they exit, revealing it as a solid prop instead of mushy.
