Bill Murray was originally scheduled for three days of filming. He shot his entire role in a day and a half then stayed on in India for a month.
Writer and director Wes Anderson said that the film was partly inspired by The River (1951). He also said he owes a debt of gratitude to Martin Scorsese for screening the film personally for him. Anderson also drew inspiration from Satyajit Ray's films and Louis Malle's Indian documentaries.
Natalie Portman travelled to Jodhpur, India, for 30 minutes of shooting, then spent ten days exploring India.
