After watching the excellent 'Velvet' another Spanish drama I needed a long series/season to lose myself in.
This had so much wrong with it from the annoyingly overpowering background drumming music, the lead actress was clearly older than the main romantic lead, and the acting comprised mainly of having head in hands or hands combing through hair and most of the performances was mediocre at best. The person playing Benji, well where did they get him from ?? He clearly never had an acting lesson in his life, he never showed any reaction and didn't know where to stand on set, and don't get me started on that back to front baseball cap.
The best actor throughout was Brian Moreno - Guillermo (his real life son played the younger version), he played the part of an evil megalomaniac to perfection. I thought no-one could be worse than JR Ewing in Dallas, decades ago, but this actor blows him out of the water !
Yes, despite all its faults, it made for compulsive viewing.

I really love the story, and I think the young girl who portrayed Ana Lucía is exceptionally talented. In the series, she has a very warm personality, emotional, a very positive vibe. But when she grows up, her vibe is suddenly cold and distant? Even though she's been through a lot, the story doesn't make her cold and distant, so I feel like the adult actress just had the wrong vibe for the part. She also looks nothing like the little girl. Absolutely nothing. They have very different facial features, and they don't even look like they could be related. Such a huge difference. There has to be SOME resemblance for this to be credible. This bothered me throughout the whole series. Besides her, casting was on point. The actress should've been a different character. Someone mentioned here that her age was wrong for this character, too, and I agree. If they had cast someone who fit better, this would've been an amazing show. I'm convinced the young actress is going to be very successful though! She's a natural. The kids in the first part were very good. Young and old Mejía (In reality son and father) were cast perfectly as well. Same goes for Toto and Dorita.
Excellent storyline, direction and acting. A perfect 10.
The story kept me glued until the end, some of the scenes had me thinking "this would not happen in real life" but who cares, it was very entertaining. I'm not sure why people are complaining about the protagonists' age gap, they both did a great job, and I don't think she looks 50 years old. There are plenty of movies where the male protagonist is way older than his counterpart and I've never heard that as a criterion for criticism the movie itself.
I love the ending of all the characters, nothing overdone or cheese. I will also like to see a 2nd session, who becomes president, Pablo's bother? Although I see it as unlikely,
