While searching for other previous Straffi projects, I discovered this a few weeks ago (all I know are Winx and Huntik).
So when I saw the video that was posted here on IMDB, I was confused. I saw that they were novels (with cheesy covers), but I also saw cool comic book pictures. And alas, Wikipedia had to confirm for me that it was turned BOTH into novels and comics at the same time. So I have been reading the reviews on Goodreads, and most people depised the novels. They all agree that Maya is an unlikable protagonist. Sadly, the books aren't dark enough. Her powers to talk to the dead came out of nowhere. But hey, she has great taste in alt music!
Wish I could get reviews for the comics! Are the comics worse than the YA novel version?!! I'm very curious. For now, though, I have to write that I adore the animation style. It's Winx gone dark. How cool is that? It's great for people like me who live and love the whimisgoth style. It's a frustration and shame that the comics were never translated into English. I read that there was a plan to do that in Germany, but it was never carried out. The comics are hard to find in general, but if you reach out to someone on social media, you can get access to it (like I did!). I only have the first issue, and now I just need to translate it on my own and other people have said it won't be easy...
It's also a shame that it never got turned into an animation in the late 2000s or 10s. I think it would've been successful. The show would've been great for the older crowd and for people who are into things dark. I'd like to think that the opening theme song would've been iconic. Maybe from a popular rock or goth band at that time. The whole animated show would've had a great soundtrack! I feel like "The N" would've aired episodes.
It's not too late to make one today! Most likely, a streaming service will pick this up if it happens. I've had a lifelong dream of getting (another dark female-oriented) Hex Girls cartoon series, and now I'm dreaming of getting a Maya Fox TV cartoon. Who will be next, I wonder lol? Anyway, I hope Straffi does something or gives us something similar in the future with a whimisgoth approach. I can dream, can I?
