Needs a bit of polish and the actor playing the titular character is a bit flat, but the show's got a great premise. I would love to see more episodes with characters, their backstories, and the universe more fleshed out. Did West Africa lead the age of imperial colonialism instead of Europe? Was Europe steipped of its natural resources (eg coal, lumber, peat, iron)? How does the triangle trade work?
It's horribly violent with the slaves being dehumanized at every turn, in every possible way. Graphic displays of "buck breaking" and handlers being quick to use violence to assert violence are front and center, forcing viewers to witness the reality if torment, often glossed over or omitted in history books so as not to offend modern white sensibilities.
Given that Man in the High Tower was a success showing the 1960s USA after Nazis won WW2, I could see this gaining a following.
