Enter the Drag Dragon

This was the first time I had ever asked for a refund for a movie ticket. I've seen straight to DVD releases that were much better.

I've seen exploitation films, and parodies of exploitation films. This film doesn't even try to be either. I've seen better work in the form of high school film projects.

The greedy and cynical attempt to profit from an iconic movie by giving this "film" a very similar title is deplorable. Bruce Lee's estate should sue the writer and director except this "film" won't make enough money to make the lawsuit worthwhile.

This is self indulgent schlock for the sake of schlock.

My first thought when I started watching this was... Geez, this is bad.

I wasn't so sure I'd stick with it. The acting was subpar, and the characters weren't very interesting.

But once dashing love interest, Sebastian (Mark Macdonald), comes on the scene, things pick up.

The story revolves around a for hire private detective named Crunch (who is played by 3 different actors during the movie, cleverly plot-driven by having him involved in accidents that necessitate facial reconstruction), looking for work, and for Sebastian's missing dog.

In the course of the movie, we're introduced to a hidden treasure whose location is cleverly hidden inside a painting that's been stolen from the local museum, a gang of thieves trying to get possession of the painting (and treasure), an Aztec mummy, and a growing hoard of flesh-eating zombies. For starters. I won't go into all the various twists, turns and utterly eccentric characters, extraordinary and ludicrous scenes that emerge in this film.

The fact that many actors in this film have few, if any film credits, and only one has a photo in the IMDB cast list might be a tip off that acting is probably not their primary profession. Yet, they give commendable performances in the context of the movie.

If you've ever seen films from Troma Entertainment, you have a pretty good idea of what to expect here. The film is brimming with crude humor, unexpected plot twists, comical gore, and 'budget-conscious' special effects.

But in fact, the special effects are terrific. From zombies being beheaded or bisected with a machete along their sagittal plane to a mysterious beer can that hits movie theatre owner, Fast Buck, in the head (hint: The theatre is allegedly haunted), amazing fight scenes, a deadly hula hoop, the hero being flung off a balcony, to looking through a telescope embedded in one zombie's eye socket from the vantage point of the missing back of his head. Can't beat the fast paced and imaginative creativity of this film.

The skillful cinematography makes the fight scenes dynamic and very exciting to watch.

Clearly the film is low budget, but they do a lot with what they have. It's entertaining, if a little bizarre.

Gay themed, though there are quite a few bare breasts to be seen, and there's also some strong language thrown in for good measure.

It's a FUN movie. Don't expect Star Wars or Bruce Lee, and you will probably enjoy some good laughs.

Definitely a fun watch!! Filmed, written, and created in and around the Ottawa region, this film is a love letter to the area, to film, and to the exploitation genres. Don't take yourself or the movie too seriously. Watch with zero expectations and see what can be created with a whole lot of heart, dedication, creativity, and zero budget. This movie has everything ... action, adventure, romance, drama, mystery, songs, kung-fu, drag queens, drag kings, zombies, lots of c*cks, a splash of sequins, and some quality special effects!! As a resident of Ottawa it was so much fun to see in the Mayfair Theatre and cheer along at the sight of Ottawa monuments and root for the good guys.

First of all, I have to correct the angry 1 star reviewer by pointing out that the title is a play on "Enter the Fat Dragon", not Enter the Dragon. Of course, they seemed to have a chip on their shoulder going in, so I'm sure it won't matter.

Anyway, this is obviously a ridiculous film, but in the best ways of b cinema. The most surprising part to me was how good the soundtrack was (unexpected!), but that's just the tip of the fun iceberg.

Really a "beers with buds" type of movie where anything goes, it's not something I'd watch with my parents, but I was delighted to enjoy it with friends & look forward to seeing it again soon (but not with my parents).

Not sure what that other guy was expecting, but the trailer is not misleading, so I guess don't expect a multi-million dollar Hollywood flick? Just a good time.
