Director Jonathan Smith filmed in New York City with no permissions and no permits. Before production, he expected trouble and punishment. However, instead, New Yorkers were respectful and helpful. After one scene on a random street on the Upper West Side, one resident yelled to the crew from her balcony. Jonathan and the actors expected her to harangue them but she instead thanked them for filming on her street. In fact, only one moment during production seemed close to trouble. During the street-drinking-with-Sandy's-friends scene, where Jaime yells at Terrence to "go back to Seattle," actress Kavita Jariwala wasn't quite nailing the rant. Then, a police cruiser spotted the filmmakers and idled on the curb nearby. Director Jonathan Smith decided to roll one last time and he told Kavita that this take was her last. She nailed it, Jonathan grabbed the equipment and ran away, and the police departed.
