So disappointing!
The books were great but the series is horrible! I was so disappointed in just how bad it is. It's nothing even remotely like the books it's a totally different story. Changing the characters completely changes the entire dynamic of the relationships and the entire story. I was so excited and a bit apprehensive, I assumed it wouldn't be quite as good as the books , tv adaptations rarely are as good as the source material,! The series is so much worse than I could have imagined! I honestly don't know why they even bothered. It's so unfortunate really. I watched with an open mind but found it to be absolutely awful.
Boring
I read these books years ago, and couldn't get enough of Anne Rice. One of my former students recommended her book Interview with a Vampire, and I became a fan. I really liked the Mayfair witched, but I don't like this series. I'm sorry to insult an actress's skills, and , perhaps the fault lies with the director, but I can't stand Alexandra Daddario as a whiny and weak Rowan! Even if she was "only" a surgeon with spectacular talent, she wouldn't be whiny. But she is not only a spectacular surgeon BUT a powerful witch as well, and all she does is whine and fall into bed with any man she encounters. Boo hiss to ruining the Mayfair witches!
Michael Curry
I have a HUGE problem with the fact that there is no Michael Curry in this show. How could they leave him out? He's too important and it's as much his story as Rowan's. To me, he's the heart of the first book - not to mean the center, but the actual heart. And I know Anne Rice put so much of herself into his character as far as his personality, beliefs, background, even the surname Curry is from her own family. He's practically the male version of herself. It seems unforgivable to just leave him behind.
And no Aaron Lightner either? Another wonderful character left out. I read that they basically combined MIchael and Aaron into the character of Ciprien, who of course isn't in the book at all. I mean those two are probably most people's favorite characters from the book. I know they are mine. And Alexandra Daddario, lovely though she is, is not the right choice to play a character as confident, capable, and immensely strong as Rowan. Rowan is a force of nature.
I had been SO excited about this show the moment I heard they were adapting The Witching Hour but knew that with such a complex story with so many characters stretched over three centuries, there were so many ways they could screw this up. It already looks like my fears are being realized.

MAYFAIR WITCHES - perhaps the gap between the first and second series was too long.
We enjoyed the first series.
The second - muddled .
Nasher - sorry Lasher - the actor who portrayed him - looked completely out of place in this series. The female characters are supposed to be in awe of Lasher - and you are just looking - thinking 'where'.
Harry Hamlin, however puts in a good performance.
Let's hope series 3, saves this saga.

Disappointed
I don't think they've stayed close to the source material at all and I'm super disappointed. There's a lot of characters that I feel are missing from the books that I've always thought were important for the story. Also a bit disappointed in how they've portrayed Lasher. The actor does a fine job, but I still don't think he matches the descriptions in the book(s).
Also, Rowan Mayfair is not a weak and insecure character but Alexandra Diddario makes her feel that way. I hope the reason for her acting this way in season 1 is because there will be some character development throughout the series, but so far I just found her acting as cringeworthy as Kristen Stewart in Twilight.
It's probably fine if viewed as a standalone from the books or something.

Le saviez-vous
- AnecdotesAnne Rice's New Orleans Garden District home was the setting of the Mayfairs' ancestral home in the novels. For those who are not local to the area, the Garden District is just outside the Central Business District. The area is known for its opulent mansions and oak tree lined streets, the St. Charles streetcar, Magazine Street shopping and restaurants, the renowned Commander's Palace restaurant, and the historic Lafayette Cemetery No. 1.
- GaffesThe 17th century Scottish blackhouse shown would not have had a fireplace and chimney, fires were in the centre of the room with smoke finding its way out of the thatched roof naturally. Chimneys would not come into use in houses like those for another 200 years.
- Générique farfeluThe portraits of various members of the Mayfair family, especially the woman, were arranged on a wall, with roots growing amongst them establishing the familial connection, similar to a family tree diagram or pedigree chart.
