Having received a major facelift from last season (which was a 12-episode mid-season replacement), with better exterior sets, a new, modernized office, less emphasis on the "shoe store," and the addition of lawyer Tommy Jefferson as a regular cast member, Harry's Law has come a long way after it's summer hiatus.
The show is a combination of the gravitas you found with The Practice and the silliness of Boston Legal, and it should move ever so quickly toward being more like The Practice and tackle tough cases as it did in the three-episode story arc that kicked off season two.
Anyone familiar with David E. Kelley's other shows (like the two mentioned above) and his writing style, Harry's Law won't be that much of a departure from his previous efforts. He created and wrote most of the episodes for Picket Fences, Boston Public, and a few others that lasted 4+ years. I'm hoping Harry's Law's ratings give it a chance to continue a good 5-year run (at least) if the writing/plots remain top-notch.
Character casting this second season has been superb, with Jean Smart and Alfred Molina guest starring in the first three episodes. Having just left as a regular cast member of L&O: Los Angeles as it was prematurely canceled and was doing great as far as ratings were concerned, even the repeats, it was good to see Molina again in a character-driven role.
Kelley's writing is top-notch as usual, with only the occasional stumble, though I think that has more to do with editing the show down to 40 minutes as Kelley is a proficient writer who's characters can have five-minute polemics at a stretch. Maybe one day they'll release uncut versions of Harry's Law before the network editors took an ax to them.
I gave it 8 stars because I really can't stand the music as it reminds me too much of Boston Legal and '70's porn. :) I also knocked off another star because Tommy Jefferson is basically a clone of Denny Crane (William Shatner) of Boston Legal. He even introduces himself and says his name repeatedly just like Denny Crane used to do (and which grew tiresome after a few episodes) on the aforementioned show.
I hope the writing continues to be great, and that we get to see Harry spend more time in the courtroom where Kathy Bates is at her best (as is Kelley's writing). And if Jean Smart comes back, that would be icing on the cake as her character was pure evil cloaked in a genteel southern accent.
I also hope they get rid of the B-roll shots of Cincinnati after every commercial break. They are a waste of time and most shows don't use them and just jump back into the episode. This gives the viewer more actual story time and dialog.

For some reason, this show reminds me of Eli Stone - a good-hearted person is thrust into a situation they would not necessarily choose to be in begins using their talent as an attorney to help those who really need it most rather than to help themselves. I actually enjoyed Eli Stone and hated to see it get cancelled so soon. In comparison, Harry's Law does not have those wonderful hallucination fantasies, but the characters certainly are quirky.
I enjoyed the first season. I think it was aired either in a convenient time slot or when everything else was in re-runs. Either way, the schedule worked out for me so that I was able to watch the show.
Unfortunately, in its current time slot, Harry's Law will probably not be people's first choice to watch. It could be the demise of the show. My own personal concern with it is that the story can only go so far before it either becomes too predictable or too boring. Let's hope that's not the case.

What happened to this show now that we are into season two. They changed the set-up, they haven't emphasized anymore that they are still in a bad neighborhood, they wrote out Malcolm and Jenna, they have added new players without even blinking, and what happened to their cases? They used to do pro bono work and help the community which included a lot of black people. So far I don't see any of that in season 2 and I don't like it. They need to go back to the roots of the show and what it was originally based on. Who cares about making money? I loved the show because Harry helped the people. She's still helping people, but the clientèle has changed and I do not know why.

This show was excellent, filled with insightful views and charged emotion about our flawed criminal justice system. Rightfully so.
The script was so very true to life in the criminal courts that it brought me to tears.
Stellar performances all around, I love these characters. If only there were young attorneys like the young patent attorney in our courts.
The shoe store idea as her office make me smile... Bring it on ladies!
The metaphysical ingredients are so refreshing. They lighten the serious issues that the script addresses.
David Kelly you've done it again... from the heart. Thank you.
Please, NBC, give us more!

I wasn't going to watch the second season, abs in fact, idthought the first season so bad that I didn't expect it to get renewed, but since I hadn't removed the series from my dvr, the season 2 premier popped up and I decided to see if it was as lackluster and childish an effort as season 1. So glad I did! With the changes he's made, Kelley has thankfully redeemed himself from something I just couldn't comprehend he'd put together after his past works. Even amidst all his goofiness, at least his prior shows' premises were interesting and seemed rooted in cases that you could believe might actually progress in such ways. Not so with Harry's Law, just one ridiculous premise after another lacking more than an ounce of reality here and there, without the extreme kookiness that allowed us to excuse such cases with Ally McBeal. In season 1 the gang members came across as something out of a 1980s after-school special. They weren't scary or threatening; they were pretty much comical in a show that was trying to be a drama first and foremost. Bates seemed to be trying too hard to be crotchety just for the sake of giving the world the finger, and she was just too contrary and frankly, unlikable to make the humorous moments seem to fit well in the same show with her. This season, something has changed, and it's not just the cast. Bates shows her fatigue over last season's ordeal; at first I thought the actress was ill, but now I think it's an intentional acting choice for the character. The characters aside from her, both her secondaries and the clients, are more interesting and believable. Suddenly there is depth in a show that couldn't seem to decide if it was a comedy with occasional serious moments, or a drama with comic elements. Thankfully, Kelley seems to have decided it is a drama with "real" people, each with their own personalities and not one-note caricatures but multiple-faceted, fairly realistic human beings. Molina as a starting guest star is a good move as well. I will actually watch this season, and changing my mind so strongly about a show is rare for me. Give it a shot; I will be watching at least a couple more episodes to see how it goes, but at this point I think it has ten times the promise of last season.

Not since Boston Legal, The Closer, and Saving Grace have I been so excited about a new show. I can just feel it, I have fallen for this show. Boston Legal was my all time favorite. I went into mourning when it went off the air. I bet this will be as good, especially since it is written by the same awesome writer as Boston Legal. I cannot wait until next Monday to see the next episode. Harry's Law combines social issues, work issues, and life issues with comedy in a way which will grab anyone who gives it a watch just once. There are very interesting characters in this show. As you watch, you think you know what will happen, only to be shown that what you may assume is not what actually is. Very astute writing and casting of the characters. Each character shown in this first episode was a person you could relate to, or was in a situation you could relate to. I gasped, I laughed, I got angry, I got worried, and finally I felt a sense of relief that maybe, just maybe everything would be okay, especially if this show comes back year after year. Cathy Bates and the supporting cast are a perfect compliment to each other.

Harriet Korn was a lawyer good at her job until burn out causes to be jetison to the scrap heap. Picking her up and dusting herself off. She finds a store front/shoe store and proceeds to make chicken salad out of chicken you know what. With her David going up against the Goliaths she gets a reputation that brings attention of fellow lawyer "Tommy Jefferson" known for his catchy name.
Season two they merge firms and add more associates which in my opinion diminished the show. According to this forum the decison to cancel was despite the ratings it was "drawing the wrong kind of ratings". Hey, the older demo Besidesgraphic has the buying power. Besides ratings are rating. Dumb move.

this a show that sneaks up you and you do not even expect it to be great and entertaining. I was bored and watched this at 2 am and was so entertained by it. They promote all the shows that have sexy, skinny girls or sexy men in them and forget to promote a really great show that is interesting and just amazing. I never liked Kathy Bates before in movies, but in this television show is really amazing. the whole cast works well together and the characters are just superb. I just can not believe that they finally came out with something that is good and not about clothes and design and rich people in big expensive house. It is about everyday people who need help and there is someone out there to help them this time,.

So the creator of this is David E. Kelly, the same David E. Kelly that created Boston Legal. Don't get me wrong I liked Boston Legal and Harry's law its just the similarity between Denny Crane and Tommy J is the same. I just wish they continued the same story in season 1

Can anyone please let me know what happened to this great show? A few days ago, I discovered it and watched season 1 within only 2 days; I was simply hooked. A charming, touching and funny show with an incredibly great Kathy Bates. Finally a show again that I really loved, some parts even had what I call "West Wing"moments.
And now - this is essentially a completely new show where they have left the two main characters, but changed every possible aspect of it, including the wonderful soundtrack music. I mean it is still quite good, but just your average lawyer show just the same as they have been produced for the last 30 years. Any explanation for that or a reaction from the network?

God I love KATHY BATES!!!!!! Great great job!!!!!! Loyal and devoted fan forever! It was funny, refreshing, warm, friendly, and good. I felt good about watching it and I felt good after watching it. I loved all the characters, even the so called bad guys. It felt kind of like watching Royal Pains and Memphis Beat. You kind of know where it was going, and that was OK because we don't always have to be mentally challenged to enjoy something. The co-stars, (the little blonde from Hair Spray) was just huggable and right for the role, as was the mother of the boy who was on trial. I wish I could remember their names! Can't wait for next week!

So disappointed in this season of Harry's Law, its very unlike season one. I've been listening to other viewers, whom is also disappointed with this season. Needs more acting, not more actors. What happen to the cast from the first season. I was looking forward to seeing some of the cast from the first season, they're are the ones that made the show worth watching. The show was based on Harry leaving Corporate America, coming to the "Hood" to help the ones whom needed legal representation, that couldn't afford a lawyer. I feel if the show don't make a change soon, I don't know about season 3. I'm sure this season's rating is much lower that season 1. Hurry and bring back some episodes like last season. That's what the viewer enjoyed.

people who rated this show with an average rating must not watch TV much to appreciate such rare ravishing piece of work. cuz to me, the pilot was amazing and just blew me away with kathy bates's powerful and charismatic persona. just like her previous works, her humanitarianism and powerful words rummaging through the show, giving it great meaning as well as a touch of her usual down-to-earth humor.
performances from the rest of the cast are great too, as i sense great energy and positiveness, especially the junior lawyer guy, hilariously astute lol.
overall, a very entertaining and meaningful show that evokes warmth and knowledge to viewers.
bottomline is TV nowadays are usually filled with dry and superficially cunning characters , rarely do u see someone as heartfelt, down-to-earth and warm as the veteran Kathy Bates. thus, we need to treasure it.
a real winner! i love it.
the ceaselessly brilliant and heart-warming Kathy Bates, love her so much!

This is just one more great program that allows Mr. Kelly to deal with the many issues going on in this country and the world and bringing them to light via TV. He hits so many things right on the money unlike the politicians......common sense, doing what is right. Programs such as Boston Legal allowed us to examine so many things and it was done so well. Harry's Law has just begun and I can see Mr. Kelly's thumb print already and I give him allot of credit for his story lines, thought process and the realization that TV can be a good thing to enlighten people about what is going on (or not going on). Thank you David for seeing it and saying it the way it is; always look forward to your programs.

I realize this is old news because this show is now a decade old but I'm just catching up to it. Apparently my opinion is not unique in the disappointment of changing the entire show to resemble some rendition of Boston legal. The quirky dynamics of the first season which was the foundation of the show was completely trashed apparently. But as far as I'm concerned that decision trashed the show because who needs another Boston Legal that's already been done. To show has no chemistry anymore. I won't be watching anymore episodes one episode of season 2 was enough for me. Which is a shame because I was perfectly prepared to binge the entire series until they tanked it.

If only...I actually cried during tonight's show (Jan 24). If anyone has every been in the condition of the older woman, they should understand. What is this country coming to? I was born here, and I've worked since I was 20, but I cannot live on my social security. Every penny I earned while working had to be used to survive, and I have a B.S. For 40 years, I've lived in a tiny (800 sq. ft.) duplex but no matter how much I tried, this was the best I could do.
I enjoy watching Hawaii Five-O, but when I saw Kathy Bates was coming to television, I changed channels for this time slot. I hope the producers continue to present the types of issues many Americans are experiencing today. It is a sad commentary that so many of our citizens are starving and/or struggling to survive in the richest nation in the world. Each time the rain falls, I feel it is God's tears.
