The Visit

The horror of the Manchester bombing many will recall through news coverage of the time, but the idea of there being a profound impact on the perpetrator- one that compells them in the face of serious illness, is an angle that is full of twisting contradictions, complexities and intrigue. It takes an actor of Cal McAninch's talent and sensitivity to tackle this complex thicket with the conviction it deserves, but the end result here is instantly as deeply mesmerising as anything I've seen for a long time. The compulsion to scale this up into a groundbreaking and potentially revelatory film must be overwhelming.

Having read the synopsis, I wasn't certain how the film makers would manage to convey a compelling account in such a short time. I needn't have worried, however, as this beautifully scripted and shot film was powerfully done and hugely evocative. I would love to see a full-length version of this. Well done to Manc Made and all involved. Cal MacAninch, as the main, significant character, had that quiet, brooding presence that keeps the viewer gripped. The script and filming were so cleverly done in terms of portraying the past and present of Macaninch's character and the city itself. Please someone reading, invest in this production.

The IRA bomb was a major cultural milestone in the history of a City and it's people that refuse to give in to hate and comes back stronger. This is a story that needs to be told and 'The Visit' gives us a taste of what could be an amazing feature film. If you haven't watched it yet, then make sure you don't miss the chance to stream it. We'll written, directed and great actors bring to life the City before and after the bomb - moody, gritty and with a big heart - just like the City of Manchester itself. We were all affected at some time by the conflict in Northern Ireland but this piece explores some of the complexities of the 'struggles' putting real people at the heart of the story!
