The Mothman Tapes

I appreciate film makers who do a lot with a little. With a budget under $10,000 there was some craft here that million dollar films would have done well to have.

Nothing here will blow your mind, but it's not trying to. It's a well worn but well tested formula that's done well.

The lead has just enough charisma to pull off the 'annoying you-tuber/wannna-be actor' without actually being extremely annoying. That's a tough balance, and he does it suprisingly well. No one in the small cast is asked to deliver stuff they can't.

Likewise with the creature effects - they are simple but done well and they aren't afraid to lean into it. Others might have made the choice to have lots more jittery camera movement to cover up the lack of CG power behind the creature. That would have been the wrong move in this case, and I'm glad they stuck with their vision.

I do enjoy the format, and this was a really solid outing, - an hour and a half I feel like I got something out of it.

If you like the mockumentary/found footage format or just want something that will pass 90 minutes enjoyably this is worth your time. Indie horror folks, likewise.

Youtuber looking for fame goes to the woods paranormal stuff blah blah we all know what this is. The crew of a youtube channel is going to the woods to investigate a picture of Mothman who is hanging out in the woods in England for some reason. They run into exposition guy who delivers some exposition. They run into the monster fairly quickly. They don't make you wait for ages for anything to happen like some of these found footage movies do. It has a short running time and moves along fairly quickly. The creature looks decent for a low budget movie and they have the sense to only give you glimpses of it. The ending is exactly what you think it is going to be if you have ever seen a found footage movie.

Another one of those "found footage" pictures that seem to be becoming filmmakers go to format as of late. And like a lot of these types of films, this one had the potential and opportunity to be really decent but something happened along the way. LOL It is a long, long time from the start of the movie to where there is any action whatsoever. And even then it starts very, very slowly. But once it gets rolling, there doesn't seem to be any brakes on this puppy!! LOL I was really stuck when it came down to actually rating this film...so I gave it the benefit of rating it quite high with a three. Give it a try if you're feeling adventurous...otherwise, leave it alone. Thankfully it was on a free site so I didn't feel quite as ripped off. LOL As always, THANK YOU and ENJOY A MOVIE TODAY!!!
