'Shimmer' is not the first Fuel song I heard. But the repeated lyric "It's too far away for me to hold" struck me hard from the first time I listened to it, & it still does. No other lyric from any song has felt this descriptive of my life to me. But for a song with such sad lyrics, the beat has quite a skip to it! This is a refreshing switch from so many sad songs that tend to be painfully slow.
The music video itself is more non-descript. Set to a rather green monochrome, the video consists of clips of the band playing the song along with items which I imagine might have been selected for symbolic meaning by certain members of the band: riding alone in the back of a cab, a cherub sculpture, a puppy alone, a silhouetted woman letting sand from their hands like an hourglass, a baby in a woman's arms, even a goldfish in a bowl.
